After watching a TV program, we decided to make a detour to visit this restaurant. There was plenty of easy parking available and the building looked nice, but we were disappointed to see that the bins were full. Inside, we were greeted by a lovely pumpkin display. However, our meal experience was not great. Despite it being 3:30pm, which may have been between meal times, being located on a motorway shouldn't have been a factor. The food options were not appealing, with dried up macaroni cheese and chickpea tagine, and a messy counter. We opted for the pies, which were fresh but slightly overdone. Just stopped for tea and a cake on our way along the M5. Picked up a pastry from just inside the door, specifically asked a member of staff if we could pay for it in the cafe, ‘yes of course’ , he also then went on to warn us that the tills only take cash! Chose a cake in the cafe, got to the till to find we could only pay for the pastry at the farm shop bit. Left without buying anything as we couldn’t face queueing again. Why couldn’t there be a notice on the pastries telling you where to pay? Why didn’t the staff member know where we should pay? Why can’t the tills be adapted so you can pay for anything at any till? Why do they only take cash? Although I’m not sure if this is all the time...
What on earth has happened to Gloucester services?! We used to come here a lot on our way up and down the M5 and always enjoyed it. The last few times it has been exceptionally disappointing. Today the steak and ale pies were so salty they were inedible. The chips were not actually cooked. The macaroni cheese was a stodgy mess. There was a limited range of hot options with no sausages available quite a scandal for a “farm” shop! It was incredibly expensive on any level but with the quality I feel we should have been paid ourselves to eat it as a dare. The restaurant area was mucky, the upholstered chairs were revolting. We stopped by after a walk in the Cotswolds and decided to visit after seeing it on TV. It's always a mistake to go shopping on an empty stomach. The breads and pastries were delicious and reasonably priced. The cooked meat and food counter was also very good. The cafe only accepted cash due to an issue, but the farmshop offered cash back. The food was wholesome and good value- it was a nice change to eat somewhere without fast food outlets.
