We found this restaurant by happy chance on our way to Avignon on Route Nationale 7 (GPS 43 degrees 40'36.4" N,5 degree's 13'33.8" E according to the restaurant's card! ) between Lambesc and Mallemort. It has tables outside and a large inside dining room with a bar and a washroom spotlessly clean with contemporary fittings. The service was friendly, informal and helpfully informative about the short but interesting menu. Dishes included a tasty fish soup with toast a la poutage, grilled steak with chimchuri, and a wheat risotto served with a salad garnished with Parmesan shavings. Wine was available by the glass or carafe. Both food and wine not excessively priced and both well above the norm in presentation and taste.

Route Nationale 7 is an unlikely spot for an elegant wine bar and first-rate restaurant, so we were surprised when we stopped by at the end of the lunch hour and were warmly welcomed despite the late hour. The menu is short, typically three or four appetisers, five or so mains, and a few home-made desserts. Our party of four enjoyed an excellent fish soup with "toast à la poutarge", a sweet-corn risotto, and grilled flank steak with chimichurri. All were excellent. The restaurant offers a wide range of wines by the glass, all very reasonably priced.

The L'Escale des Vins is located on D7N about half way between Mallemort and Lambesc. It is in a modern, attractive building with perhaps the most unusual and beautiful flooring we have seen in this area of France. The food is priced a little higher than the usual 14-16 euro menus found in most towns along the way. I had a large scallop on raviolis in a cream sauce with leeks (19 euros). It was large enough to be fully satisfying all by itself. My wife had two scallops with julienne vegetables in a crispy crepe bowl (15 euros). It too was large enough to be fully satisfying. Both dishes were beautifully presented. I ordered a 1/2 liter of local rose which was very good and priced at only 6 euros. Seating is available outside on a shaded porch or inside. The restroom was spotlessly clean. We recommend this restaurant if you want a lunch priced a little above average but with food and wine that are way, way above average. Bon appetit!

Maybe today was an off day for this restaurant. What a charming sunny day at a near full patio. Awesome! We ordered wine, salad, beef, and salmon. Wine arrived. About 40 minutes later, no tables we’re getting their food. None. Even tables asking for ice or a drink were getting nothing even after asking repeatedly. Service? Nowhere! Locals were upset. People started to leave. We didn’t complain not wanting to be “those” people but our neighbouring tables (locals) were appalled on our behalf and told them so. We speak French so I quietly appreciated their intervention. About an hour later when the starter/salad arrived it was delicious. About another half hour later our mains arrived and were also delicious. Service was so atrocious locals were expressing to one another how disappointed and dissatisfied they were. I cannot recommend this restaurant even though the food we eventually got was quite nice.

Good service, great environment indoors and out. They have a great shaded outdoor terrace if weather permits.
