Firstly this restaurant owes its popularity to its beautiful setting on the river in the heart of Lunas. The ambiance and decor is 'rustic quaint ' and the service is quite pleasant. The menu has a reasonable variation to suit most diners, however I chose to go with the owner 's recommendations for both starter and main courses. The chevre was presented on a long rectangle plate and from left to right it had a chickpea salad, then whipped cream with some lime (no idea why) then at the very end two very thin slices of pre warmed chevre on thin toasted bread. The combination was not focused on the chevre and everyone that commented on this particular dish had positive comments only for the chickpeas. Hmm? Then the main course, I had been promised fantastic quality beef, beef that you could order rare and it would be a delight to eat with its wine sauce. On arrival I was taken aback by the presentation. This plate of food looked like I had finished my meal already and I had left 3 very small chuncks of beef and a few chopped up potatoes. As the group began eating the main course I couldn 't help thinking that I should have never selected the owners recommended dish. The plate was cold, the food was cold and unappealing, trying to cut a cold rare cube of beef in order to place something palletable in the mouth was impossible because of how the chef cut the cubic strips. The beef was neither in slices or a steak formation, it was an unpleasant and not good at all. I then proceeded to order a cheese plate with bread because I was hungry and very disappointed with my recommended food. I later realised that we were surrounded by other tables who had ordered pizza. It seems like Chateau De Lunas is quite popular with the locals for pizza!! In retrospect I wished that the owner had recommended the local favorite pizza rather than cold and fiberous chewy beef! Perhaps the owner was let down by the chef or there is a lack of communication between them as the food does NOT match the setting. I will return to Chateau de Lunas with friends as it is a truly wonderful place to go. However I will recommend that we all have cold beer and pizza.. Caio!!

The setting is beautiful. The Dutch owner charismatic and friendly.. … and multilingual, but reading other reviews, after our visit, there seems a pattern emerging. We were also advised by him to order a half bottle of wine rather then by the glass. He also skimmed over the pizza page. The menu was confusing as there was a menu du jour at 16,50€. From the a la carte starters about 13.00€ mains 24.00€ but a “formula” of 27.00€ for two courses. Pizzas were about 14-15.00€. I opted for the owner’s special recommendation for main course…..pork cheeks and somehow thought that was the plat de jour. The meal was fairly lack lustre and as others have said the pizzas did seem the best option. Then the bill. I asked for it and the young waitress asked me to follow her into the château where she tapped out some numbers on a calculator and presented me with the card reader for 90,60€. In retrospect I’ve no idea where this figure came from. Everything on the menu was round figures so the 0,60€ popped up out of the blue. It was also impossible to see how she arrived at that total. We have a house in France, speak French, and live here half the year so are used to eating out here and thought we were immune to the “tourist sting”. Obviously not!

Restaurant Chateau Lunas is celebrating its 40th year in business, a serious achievement and well deserved. I can think of only two restaurants in Dublin that are still going after 40 years. We have been coming here for over 20 years and have always enjoyed Peter’s hospitality and good cooking and oh the views of the river. This lunch was in a new league of exuberant, unrestrained, passionate cooking, however. The Meteor rose was outstanding a perfect accompaniment to carpaccio of trout. We then had duck and pan seared beef in a riot of colour and flavour, beef meltingly tender, a rarity in this part of France. A perfect meal in a perfect place we will be back and soon!
