it was such a pleasure to go back to one of our favorite pubs and a welcome view it was on a very hot day after a long and invigorating coastal hike. we were worried that this popular gas house might be Mega Busy on a...Saturday afternoon, but had no need to be, we were greeted by the eyes of the customers who enjoy their drinks outside, and no sign of any waiting snakes. the reason for this was the ingenious deli type ticketing system of the pubs to give the drinker at the arrival a numbered ticket, and then wait until their number is called when it is their order. this system worked really well and was a good way for them to deal with the current social restrictions at the time of writing....

Can’t help think that customers who frequented this delicious and quirky old pub many years ago would be delighted to see it has hardly changed at all. Whilst many old village boozers like this have been turned into gastropubs or indeed closed all together, the...Square and Compass soldiers on with its narrow corridors, squished snug and attached fossil museum. Menu? Great choice of pasties: steak or cheese- all bases covered! Must be an iconic watering hole as there aren’t many pubs as busy as this on a cold Friday afternoon in winter.

we stayed in worth matravers and strolled into this pub, as it was about 100m away from our stay. they order from a luke and this is a pub for beer not cocktails or similar. the main room has an open fire and we found the mixed group of visitors all kind. we returned in the second night and had a meat pasty and a veggie pasty, while the meat was cold the veggie was not and we stayed for 2 drinks. they can sit in the bar and imagine the time of the old, but certainly no need to dress up here.

an atmospheric old pub with a large outdoor seating area with a magnificent view of the coast. yes, you probably need to intimidate for your drink and yes, the pasties are perhaps not heston like, but young ones have for a consistently satisfying overall experience. it doesn't matter whether they went along the coast and earned their drink, or whether they drove there, this is a target audience not to miss. oh, and these homemade zider are a tasty bite. fun. No drink in a plastic beaker is worth queueing half an hour for. Gave up after 20 mins mostly because people not observing social distancing in the queue or around the table area. Not many tables. Very disappointed especially as we had just...finished a 6 mile walk. Motivated to get the beer, de motivated by the service and atmosphere. Avoid if you are safety concious or averse to plastic.

We always visit this pub in the nice weather to take time out and enjoy the amazing view. Staff are always friendly, food lovely and the world feels a million miles away. We nickname this pub the chicken pub as there are always chickens roaming around...in the beer garden which is fsntastic.

Probably the best pub in Great Britain. I'd say nostalgic, but no, it's never changed. Go there before it does. Beer and cider and Hardy views. Makes me want to weep for the way we've let our pubs go. Our compass will always guide us...back here ...

one of these rare sound of a pub tied to its tradition, serves great beer and pasties and that is it. roaring log fire when cold and south with view of the garden with breathtaking view if the sun seems what more they want. Réservez une table maintenant

Lovely place to sit and enjoy a drink after taking the dogs for a walk. The staff are friendly and efficient. The que to get a drink sometimes can be large, but this somehow adds to the charm. Will definitely be back.
