It's hard to rate 55 due to the fact that its attraction lies in its 'je ne said quoi'. I hadn't been here for >10 years and had fond memories. The sense of style and history is there, but unfortunately it's overwhelmed by the sheer number of people trying to experience it. I was desperate to leave. We were there on a Sunday, mid-August, arriving by boat. We had lunch reservations and some matelas. The issues:- it was rammed with people. I am sure the density has been increased since my last visit. For me, the beach was claustrophobic in extreme. You could barely exit your bed. In the restaurant, our table was enveloped by queuing people to the point that we were invisible to the staff.- the food is a little heavy for me, for the beach. Veal chops, roast chicken etc.- the crowd has its moments. There were Parisien fashionistas air kissing with lapdogs on the tables. But there were a lot of tattooed, bling people too. That is not a crowd that you want your kids to spend their beach days around. It was fun, at least for the meal, once we got service. We bumped into people we knew, and it's great people watching. There really is a special scene underneath the zoo. But at least on an August weekend, it's unusable as a beach club. We were at a neighbouring club the day before, and the atmosphere was far calmer. Even if I chose to eat at 55 again, I would choose a different beach.Of course, it goes without saying that it's spectacularly expensive. Lunch for 3, with one bottle of wine, and 2 courses, was €300.
