With a 12 euro three course menu - and three choices for main course on it - no surprise that the dining room of this restaurant was full. No small room either; there must have been forty people in the on a Wednesday lunchtime in late April, and all French I would guess. We opted for the bar and for great moules frites (les nouvelles moules boulot sont arrivés, they proudly proclaimed). Same price as the menu but for that about a kilo of moules each! A great Muscadet from a critically acclaimed producer went down well as did the laughter, smiles and sense of pleasure from the predominantly female staff. What a great place! Don't expect anything haute about the cuisine - it's basic - but this is what France used to be all about. Thorough pleasure. We compared our happiness to our reaction to a Michelin starred lunch a few days earlier.Incidentally, St Quax is a great location for accessing the extraordinary, magnificent beaches on the western side of the St Brieuc bay.
