We stumbled into Viriat looking for coffee and left following a super meal of the regional speciality "Poulet de Bresse". The food was lovely and the sauce that was served with the chicken was subtle and mouth watering. Additional bread was provided to assist us in ensuring that none of the sauce was wasted.Service was friendly but but times a little slow. However the meal proceeded very smoothly and the desserts were equally impressive. Many locals were in attendance which is always a good sign.Pricing was reasonable and four of us had a two course lunch with a bottle of wine for Euros 140. Given the quality of the food this pricing was correct.Would we go back? Most certainly if we are ever in the area. We visited on a hot day when outdoor seating was the way to go. However, the restaurant has a substantial amount of pleasant indoor seating if the weather is cool.
This large restaurant was recommended to us, it was modern and well presented. It was obviously popular with the locals. It was busy and we sat for quite a long time before anyone came to serve us. One of the girls was quite surly and clearly could'nt be bothered, the other thankfully quite the opposite. It was a Buffet night but this was not made clear, the Buffet being in an adjoining room. However, that said we eventually enjoyed the fare on offer which included Prawns and a range of Salad choices.
Perhaps we missed something - the French reviews are more favourable than ours - we thought this restaurant was rather average - haughty service, not very friendly, rather inflexible for the kids (no chips and no suggestions to help a fussy eater...) a disappointing and overpriced poulet de Bresse. That said, the dame blanche was excellent and the starter buffet a nice idea - a better choice for an older couple than a family.
I agree with a review that says that they might have missed something because their review was not as favorable as others. I feel the same as we were not so happy here. it was one of the only options available so we stopped...taste of the famous poulet de bresse, but we were not blown away. the menu selection is very limited, especially if they are on the look for vegetable side dishes. I think a vegetarian or even someone with intolerances would fight to eat something. it is in the ground solid old fashion French cuisine, but not its best

In view of the quality of food, this pricing was correct. would we go back? Certainly if we were ever in the opposite. we visited a hot day when the seats were free to go away. however, the restaurant has a considerable amount of pleasant interior sitting when the weather is cool.
