I was back in Winnipeg to visit my son. My 6th trip to Winnipeg, we try different restaurants each time. This time we decided to look for the best food in the city, so we headed to 529 Wellington.Note, there is no sign that identifies the restaurant from the street. The restaurant is in an old mansion, and the atmosphere is amazing from the time you walk through the heavy front doors. We went with business casual, definitely not a place for jeans and a t-shirt. The servers are all wearing white. We were seated and our server was by with water and for a drink order within a couple minutes. Water was ice cold. We both ordered Stella and it was served ice cold as well. At that point we knew were in for a great evening. We started with a couple appetizers, the prosciutto wrapped scallops and their mini yorkies. I was amazed when the appetizers came out within 5 minutes. Both were amazing, I loved the crispness of the prosciutto. The yorkies pastry was very light and the tenderloin was tasty. My son opted for the special, beef wellington and had a side of their version of mac and cheese ( 4 cheeses and lobster.) I went for the chef's seafood trio. It was a small serving of each of the main seafood dinners, tuna, cod and salmon. I had a twice baked potato. We enjoyed a quiet conversation and another Stella while we waited for our dinner. Out it came and the presentation was beautiful. Because the potatoes were small they brought me 2 potatoes. If these were small I would hate to see what large looked like. My sons mac and cheese also was a very generous portion. We enjoyed our meal, my son finished off his beef wellington in no time. I took my time with my seafood. The cod with their butter sauce was so full of flavour I wanted more. The salmon was also excellent. I am not a big tuna fan, it was good as far as tuna goes.My son finished everything he ordered, but he was full. I could only get through one small potato. We did save a bit of an appetite for dessert. We went for the chocolate lava cake with fresh vanilla bean ice cream. The cake was very good, full of dark chocolate flavour without being too sweet. And the ice cream was very good as well. We finished it off and then we were done.We were not rushed at any point in time and had a casual conversation for another 20 minutes before we paid the bill and went home. This was the best meal and service we have had in Winnipeg. Great quality food, spectacular ambiance and an evening to remember for a long time.We will definitely be back when the budget allows it.The two of us with drinks and tip were about $275, so don't expect a cheap night, but it is worth every penny.
