541 | Eatery & Exchange

Went down to 541 eatery for breakfast Friday morning. What a fantastic idea, lovely, clean, cozy restaurant. Full breakfast which was not only delicious but also super cheap. Also, I'm not usually a coffee drinker, but had coffee this morning and it was very good, might I say better than Tim Hortons, and no annoying roll up the rim! I also purchased buttons, said buttons can be used by other customers, who may be a little short of cash. You could not tell which customers had money, or which customers were short of cash. This is a lovely hidden gem in Hamilton. Before leaving I purchased half a dozen cookies for my daughters, also very yummy. This is truly a must visit spot in our city of Hamilton. Now my kids want to go try it out, so we will definitely be back.

About once a year I get together with a former student of mine whose master's thesis I supervised. We catch up and generally have an excellent time. He suggests places in Hamilton where we can get good food. He has NEVER steered me wrong. Indeed, 541 is an excellent place. Not only is the food reasonably-priced but one can but buttons to "pay it forward." People, if in need, can get a meal for free by taking a button from the appropriate jar. Some people of limited means volunteer in exchange for a free meal. It is a great place that helps people in true need...and provides excellent food for anyone and everyone.

four friends today March 31/2016 had one of the best morning breakfasts, you order at the counter and they bring it to you hot, this is a place where you pay cash and the change you get you can buy buttons for those who can not or do not have money what a great idea to give back to the needy. this place is always busy at lunch and the food is always fresh very day.these two owners saw a need and ran with it and it has now become a hot spot for breakfasts and lunch. you have done this area a great boost in helping others.thanks

541 is a cafe that is hip yet fulfills a vital part of supporting the community around Barton St. in Hamilton Ontario. The restaurant has a button system where customers that have extra change can "buy forward" coffee to those that can't afford food. Buttons are given out to the community members who find it hard to meet the financial needs of their families each week. The food is fantastic. The coffee is great and what a wonderful place to support Hamilton

There are so many good things to say about 541. The food is great, not pretentious just really really good. The local is full of light, the staff is adorable, the button system is smart and the involvement in the community is admirable.
