Australia is known for superlative coffee. So why is the best cup of coffee I had in Melbourne in the Air New Zealand lounge at the airport? This makes no sense ... but that's the way it is. The coffee was absolutely superb. The universe operates in strange and mysterious ways. For what it is worth, If you are absolutely positively dying for cheese kranskys, You can get them at the Air New Zealand Lounge. Cheese kranskys are tough little sausages with cubes of cheese inside and a lot of spice. Your jaw will absolutely get a workout. They are greasy in the way you want your breakfast sausage to be a little greasy. I can now knock cheese kransky off of my bucket list. My recommendation to you,...
Disappointing... the food was like something from an elementary school lunch room. Fried fish sticks, potato wedges, and tasteless broccoli soup. There is a cool pancake machine but the pancakes sucked. Some areas are WAY overlit (this was in the evening) and I couldn't even sit there because the lights would be right in my eyes. Why so bright? The bathrooms were nice though. Aesthetically pleasing. And there are showers. Self-serve beverages of all kinds is great. There is a pool table!! Overall, the food was disappointing compared to other lounges I've been to. I was hoping for better quality.
For United Airlines passengers, this is probably the better lounge at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. Since UA closed its lounge several years ago, Singapore Airlines lounge and the Air New Zealand lounge became the only options, and the latter is substantially larger and has better service. The lounge is located two floors below the departure level.
You have to head down the escalators to the lounge. It was pretty quiet when we went in the morning. We sat next to the window where you can see the planes. I already had breakfast beforehand, so I didn't eat anything. I did enjoy a Hazy Passionfruit Infused Cider that was pretty refreshing. Showers are also available here.
