Our extended family party of 7 + a small 9 year old baby girl met up at the Alte Brauerei one Sunday evening recently. Parking wasn't easy but we found somewhere in a side, residential street nearby. Having got settled our vivacious young waitress embarked on getting the rounds of drinks on the go. I spent the evening drinking Dom Kölsch which was just how it should be - freshly drawn from the barrel and nicely chilled. The menu is fairly typical of a German brewery "Kneipe". In addition I liked the fact that they also had roast goose with huge dumplings, red cabbage and more than sufficient, delicious gravy. Three of us went for that & we were not disappointed. My son had one of the biggest schnitzels that he had ever seen - and this came with a huge platter of piping hot chips - apparently three servinigs but we couldn't figure out why. Indeed all the servinigs were huge - we must have looked very hungry. At the end of the meal we were offered free ouzo to help with the digestion which was a nice touch. For a Sunday evening, I was surprised by how full the place was. And, whilst being relatively close to Christmas, we got the impression that the place was decked out preferably for Carnival in February next year. This is a great, homely and friendly place for traditional German cooking - solid and lots of it with the chance to wash it all down with copious quantities of beer. We managed well over 2 litres in the couple of hours we were there. We'll be back.... soon
