While the atmosphere in Altenberger Hof is wonderful, most of the dishes we had yesterday at noon were terrible (and expensive). The duck of my mother-in-law was dry and was cold like eating leather and their potatoes. My husband had a different kind of potatoes and his were also cold. He said his salmon dish and accompanying vegetables were tasteless. My carving was oily and soggy without any knocks. My salad and potatoes were good. A bit disappointing to have only two side shells are worth the cost. My mother-in-law grew up and still lives in the area and was happy to treat us for a nice lunch. She was upset by the experience.
The service here is amazing, the restaurant staff are professional and courteous. Unfortunately I found the food incredibly greasy and unappealing, and also very expensive. The atmosphere is lovely, the restaurant is clean and open and complete with charming cushions dotted around the place and authentic German decorations adorning the shelves and walls. However most dishes exceed 25 euros, and a soup starter can set you back 12.50 euros! The food was not worth the cost at all, I have had better meals for a fraction of the price. I did feel very welcome by the staff thought.
The place is located in the old monastery of Altenberg. Parking at the front is possible, but economical. Another public parking (for a fee: 3 euros) is not far available. They have a very large inner area and a very large outer area. The decoration is top class. The menu includes mainly local dishes. I had an asparagus soup that was too salty. The main dish, a trout, was slightly overcooked. When dessert I had a variation of cheese that was fine. We had a Rioja Crianza on the side that was good. The service is perfect. The prices are a little high.
The restaurant was part of the hotel we visited. We took the evening to have our dinner at the restaurant. The food was well prepared local German cuisine, traditional and local. If you have an interest in local foods that are not spoiled by tourist adjustments (as you find it in many places now) this is a place where you get it and in excellent quality. We also enjoyed the service that was very polite and helpful.
