"Beautiful surrounding by the river, big terasse and many tables. Shadow and nice breeze from the river made it awesome on a hot, sunny day. Basic, good food. Salads are very big and tasty."

looking for a classic German beer garden experience? this is the one to come to.the Alter Hammer is a favorite meeting spot for locals, (my in-laws have been coming here and meeting friends here for years) and you'll understand why -- it's a great location right by the river (the Rhine) and has a huge outdoor area where you can enjoy the river views and people watching. it's ideal for kids, as there is plenty of space to run around and explore within view of the tables. it's an easy walk from the sights of Speyer or by bike.it's a typical Biergarten menu & prices; you do pay for the view a little bit, but it's not at all touristy-overpriced. food is decent, and there's good variety. great beers and wurst (sausage). there are a few vegetarian options.TIP: if it's a crowded day (esp. summertime) and you see some spots open at a table that's occupied, simply ask politely if you can join. people are generally friendly, and culturally it's totally normal to share a table with strangers if there are places free.
A group of 18 friends decided to visit the cathedral at Speyer and after a lot of walking, this restaurant looked like a great place to have a lunch.We sat outside as inside was full. The restaurant is just adjacent to the Rhine river. As we sat, we could see the passenger boats ply by. My friends ordered lots of different types of drinks - mostly beer. For the main course I ordered Maultaschen, a turkey based ravioli. Price was €10.20. It wasn't want I expected but turned out pretty good even so. It's like a fried wanton/momo kind of dish with minced turkey. My son ordered the beef rump steak. Cost € 18.90. They cooked it too dry. The salads were great too.Our waitress was not the most accommodating. She seemed impatient when we were not able to speak German. She was mumbling when she didn't understand what we saying, making no efforts to understand. However, the company of good friends and good food made up for that.
We arrived in the pouring rain, after taking a stroll along the river from Speyer Tecknic museum. When we got there the restaurant was full with only tables available outside. We took the last table under the umbrellas and order local beers which were very good and also food which was equally good. It rained and blow all while we were there but we stayed dry and had a good evening, Pity the sun didnt shine and that the Rhine River was so flooded, especially on the far side of the river bank. Well worth a visit but think it would be very busy on a sunny evening.They do not take any debit or credit cards, cash only.
