As an expat in Barcelona I've tired of the luxury food fads of the last 20 years around here. It seems that every place is trying to be more that it really is. But exactly the opposite is what I love about the Antic Celler: it's much more than it seems. Josep and his staff are skilled, honest and unpretentious in their approach to wine and food. I've been a few times, most recently for a wine tasting, and I'm always impressed with the thought and care that goes into everything they do. Sure, the place is in a completely unlikely spot for foodie tourists, but those that make the trek will be rewarded with clever snacks paired with delicious and often surprising wines. (The addition of small pieces of strawberry to a tradional tapa of red pepper and tuna was a stroke of culinary inspiration that really surprised me. And, if you are lucky, you will try the sumptuous foie gras that they bring from a small producer in France. Not the sad little pieces you get on top of salads in so-called fashionable restaurant in Barcelona center, rather a healthy, fresh portion served correctly and at the right temperature. You can't get that anywhere else in Barcelona as far as I know. Anyway, kudos to Josep and company: just watching their seriousness in preparation of the drinks and plates and tasting the results, you know you are in the hands of a great professional team.
