Four of us came here recently for an evening meal, we were surprised how busy the pub was and we were told that the restaurant wasn't open until 7 pm, not a problem as it was not too long to wait. We ordered our drinks and studied the menu before entering the dining room, very nice and traditional. The meals were OK but in our opinion a bit pricey for what you got, but that's country pubs nowadays I guess. Listening to some of the conversation taking place in the bar, I would hazard a guess that some hotel guests come here for either the fishing on the river or country walking with the pub as a base. An enjoyable experience, worth a visit.
We decided to have lunch near Hay during the festival, expecting limited space options. We came across The Red Lion and decided to stop on a whim. The pub offers a small but great selection of ales and quickly filled up with locals and tourists. We enjoyed a good value roast for £11.50, which included two generous slices of meat carved from a choice of three joints, Yorkshire pudding, self-serve roasts, and four vegetables. The homemade desserts were a nice touch, and the service was friendly.
I had a wonderful Sunday Carvery at this restaurant today. The food was very well prepared, with a generous portion of meat. I would highly recommend the pork. The vegetables were fresh and cooked perfectly, not overdone. The homemade creme brulee was fabulous. The service was friendly and helpful. Thank you very much. The prices were reasonable.
Stopped at the red lion for a few days on a fishing trip. Lovely environment wonderful staff and to top it off superb food. Paul is an absolute credit to this restaurant and his chocolate moose is to die for. Will definitely be returning Thankyou once again for a wonderful mini break xxx

I love stopping to this pub on Sunday afternoons, when local farmers are there sharing their stories whilst enjoying a pint, but last month I accidentally popped in for a curry. Buffet was packed and for a good reason: it was a mouth watering treat!
We popped in for a roast after hearing there was a new chef. There's a good selection of starters, roasts and puds to choose from, all very tempting. The pork roulade was delicious, as was my partners roast beef, and came with all the trimmings....

12.30 Sunday lunch on a bank holiday weekend, arrived and tried to order 7 roast dinners, We were told , you 'll have a long wait. by a bar host who seemed genuinely annoyed to have to supply the food.

I stayed in town for a week and decided to have lunch here on Sunday. The meal was delightful, with perfectly cooked vegetables. The atmosphere was warm and friendly.
Small dining room but good choice of menu and food was excellent. Had main course and dessert which were both delicious.
