We took the train from Berlin to Frankfurt to catch our flight back to the United States which was early the next morning. We were therefore only in Frankfurt for just over 12 hours and wanted to get one last traditional german meal in. After checking TripAdvisor, I found two restaurants (the number 1 restaurant) and Atschel (which was number 8 (now 7) out of 2000+ restaurants in Frankfurt). We asked the hotel to make a reservation but since the first restaurant did not pick up the phone (they had just opened at 5pm), we went with Atschel as they answered the phone (as they're open for lunch as well). Overall I kind of wish we had waited for the other restaurant to pick-up the phone. Anyway,...
This review is for customer service, not the food as we did not get a chance to actually try anything there. We (my sister in law, myself and my 10 year old son) went to this restaurant on our first day in Frankfurt (and first time in Germany!) based on good reviews and were looking forward to trying some good German food.It was over 33 degrees C, so on our way there we got some bottled water....Now the restaurant was very busy! The weiter (no smile...) showed us to a table inside and as soon as we were seated, the bartender told us to remove our water bottles from the table. That was rather odd and very unwelcoming comment, but we complied...The menu looked interesting with many choices of...
The food was a sensation! Heavenly feast with great Bembel (apple wine) which makes the combo even more exceptional. We ordered the Haxe (pork knuckle) and the Schäufelchen (pork shoulder). The restaurant has an old school German look and feel, so be prepared to share a table if you are less than a party of 6 people. Regardless, with apple wine flowing from pitchers combined with plates of butchers cuts, this is a MUST. I would recommend to order a table but if you are 2 or 3 people just swing by unannounced, and be seated with others at a table listening to the magpie chirp every few minutes throughout the restaurant chatter.
We did not have a reservation and we were able to sit outside in the garden. It’s been busy but we have been served in a decent time and the food arrived just in the right time. Amazing place to try the green sauce, and I usually never eat Schnitzel from the pork but this one was very delicious. I wouldn’t have noticed it was pork, if I didn’t know it. The waitress suggested tasting platter as a starter which was a big mistake, as the Schnitzel was more than enough. We also had a 4er Bembel for two of us, which we could not finish again. I'm not a native German but I've been living here long enough to know the difference between a freshly cooked Schnitzel and something that was stored waiting to be warmed up and served. Also, the Frankfurter Schnitzel comes with Bratkartoffeln and not Pommes (as in fried). Terrible service, dirty tables and loud. Won't come back.
We went here on the off chance and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was excellent and the ambulance was a busy and family oriented. It is in the German bench style so you could be sat next to people who you don't know. If you want a typical German experience you won't go far wrong by going here.
Everything is fantastic! They went above and beyond to be amazing, the chef was wonderful. And the cute boy that was serving drinks was the best. But the kitchen closes at 10pm. Even though they were very accommodating and brought us some food anyways. They are fabulous.
