Bar Von der Fels is a small, casual wine bar downtown. We went as a group of 4 and had a reservation on a Saturday night. The room filled up as the night went on.We shared all the dishes we ordered and drank wine by the glass. All 4 of us had different tastes in wine and the server made it easy to find wine that we all liked. The food was very, very good. Everything we ordered was wonderful. The wine I had was above average for my experience. We felt like the food and wine was above-average value, even though it wasn't cheap. Stopped here with my boyfriend after a Flames game. I only mention that because I'm assuming that's why we got such terrible service - we didn't fit with the typical clientele? The server who seated us said they didn't have a menu, but rather, would get one of the sommeliers to recommend a wine to us based on our tastes. Okay. We visited as a group of 4 for wine and conversation. Having just had a meal down the street we did not try any of the dishes but from what we saw at other tables they looked well worth trying! We did have the apple tart dessert which was about as good as I could imagine an apple pie being, delicious! The real reason for our visit however was the wine. The wine list looks spectacular, with some wonderful choices. We chose to have wine by the glass as we had different tastes this evening. I stumbled upon this Bar when I was reading Air Canada's contenders for best restaurants. I was surprised to see that it was only two blocks from my place. Point is, it's easy to miss. I am quite sure I walked by it at least a half dozen times and never saw it. It's SMALL. Very small. Only a few tables which filled up very nicely while we were there. The kitchen is open and also super tiny and explains the limited but delicious share menu. The wine list had plenty of choice including some orange wines. Would highly recommend it.
Tucked away and with very little commercial notice---We arrived only becauseof reference and recommendations from Foreign concepts!Service and knowledge of wines was informative.Room represented a feel of "stark", yet comfortable ambiance.Menu was enticing with tartare, root vegetables, crab tagliatelle and duck breast.We enjoyed the walnut and apple ensalmada with cornet crème--outstanding!We all agreed----an immediate repeat!

Went for a wine testing with a friend and discovered that you can try a dozen different types of wine that I hadn't had the pleasure of trying before. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and they are affiliated with Metro Vino so you can go and buy the ones you like. The food was also amazing, simple and tasty.
Stark , yet comfortable ambiance. Service was immediate and very wine informative. Menu represented some innovative, yet expected appetizers with tatare and veg. salads. Long bar presentation, yet areas for intimacy. Somewhat Italian in kitchen specializes. Definitely a repeat!
