My family of four went today for brunch and most of the menu was unavailable which is fine, we chose from the few available options. We then waited for 50minutes for our food. The chef started shouting loudly in front of everyone (including lots of children and babies): “I’ve had enough of this f ing place, it’s the same every f ing week” and so on. Our food turned up eventually and it was all stone cold. The pancakes were actually raw inside and inedible. I now understand why this was the only place for food in Saffron Walden without a queue round the block. We will not return.
Despite the website saying this cafe closed at 4pm a waitress (she said she was management) tried to take unfinished teapots away at just after 3.30pm. She said the website time was wrong and they needed to close. We asked to be allowed to finish our drinks and about 10 minutes later she insisted we put our tea into paper cups and cleared our table. Her manner was really quite officious. She clearly wasn’t bothered about our custom which is just as well as we definitely won’t be returning. Saffron Walden has a wealth of friendly coffee shops to choose from.
I observed the chef for thirty minutes and noticed that everything he served had been cooked the day before and simply reheated for customers. The only items that were not pre-cooked were pre-packaged (pancakes, bread, brioche, etc). The only exception was the poached eggs. It was obvious as soon as the food was served. The coffee was good, but the pastries looked decent, although they were also stale. It's disappointing that they couldn't cook the bacon and sausages fresh on the same day they were served.
A few years ago, this restaurant began as a bike cafe, but most cyclists have since stopped going because it is not very good and no longer caters to cyclists besides its name. The flat whites were enjoyable, but the food was very disappointing. The menu was limited and did not interest any of us in our cycling group. We regretted not going somewhere else. Thank you to all the staff at Bicicletta today who were kind, caring and supportive when my dad collapsed outside watching the Carnival today. Looked after the dog and dad while i went to get help and let him stay there with the St John’s Ambulance team until I came back with the car. There wasn’t anything they couldn’t do for us. Thank you all once again!
Visited with my family today and couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable by two staff members who couldn’t keep their hands off each other behind the counter. Not normally bothered by public displays of affection however these two where unprofessionally hanging off each other. Can’t knock the food and drink, atmosphere great too! Just felt a bit awkward
I made a pit stop at this restaurant on my way to meet up with an old friend. The coffee was excellent and the staff were very friendly. I also tried a cheese toastie as a light lunch, and it was delicious and satisfying. The village was charming as well, and I would definitely come back to visit again.
Popped in for Sunday brunch and wasn't disappointed . Nice atmosphere, food came promptly and was really good. I recommend the breakfast bun, it was really a treat, my wife had advacado on toast and said it was also lovely, all washed down with lovely smooth coffee. It was so good we returned for lunch!
