"Quaint lil' place l just went to with my son.. We both just wanted a beer before an appt he had, so in we went. I had a very tasty, full bodied Hefe Weizen, (best I've had in Austin so far), he had an IPA. We saw the food coming out, it looked awesome! Just a beer for us, very nice energy here, a lively lil' haunt for get togethers. We might go back after we're done here! ?"

We were craving fish and chips. I called at 6 pm. I only had one concern after reading the reviews. I hoped they now served tarter sauce and vinegar instead of Aioli or sour cream. Anyone can make a good tarter sauce. I went directly to a message machine where I was informed of the daily hours and then told if I had further questions, I could email. EMAIL?A damn shame. I would have brought my own tarter if need be. If you cannot be personable and fun on the phone, what are the odds with the servers and atmosphere? Wish you the best. It could have been an epic night for all of us.

I used to genuinely love this place. In the last six months of trying to eat here, I've noticed a couple of significant changes. First, they never have the fish and chips in stock past 7pm. That was my favorite thing on the menu, and now they seem to be unable to stock it properly. Second, their beer selection is stagnant and very limited. They used to have guest taps rotating every week, but now it's just the same old same old almost every time. I hope they turn it around, but right now I have no reason to go to Black Star.

Great local, neighborhood place. A cooperative, where members and owners actually work on site, and get to know you!Great beer and cider produced at the brewery on site.Food is good too; the spicy chicken sandwich was outstanding and the pie flight is a tasty delight that you can share with one, two or three other people!Be aware, it can be very noisy on weekends with a full house and live music/ trivia, and your food can take an hour or so to come out. If that's not your scene, go on a weekday...

I love a good brewery and what makes this place special is that it is a cooperative that pays a living wage and tips are not allowed. I think this may be why the staff seemed to actually enjoy their job and what they do. I came in on a Sunday afternoon and a lot of their brews were sold out but I did enjoy the Bohemian Lager I ended uo with and all of the food items we ordered were top notch. They also had a DJ/Trivia Host and it was cool to see groups come in for that.
