We began our meal with the Baked Crab Artichoke Dip, and it was absolutely amazing—loaded with cheese and flavor, we couldn't get enough of it. During my visit to Catalina, I stopped by this restaurant after disembarking from the boat, and we were really hungry. It was our first choice for a meal. I ordered the Rainbow Trout while my partner opted for the shrimp tacos, asking for no slaw. The trout was cooked perfectly, but it was quite under-seasoned; I found myself needing to add salt and a squeeze of lemon. However, the scalloped potatoes were absolutely fantastic—rich, creamy, and cheesy. Super please and surprised at how much I liked this restaurant. I'll preface it by saying it wasn't crowded since it was the off-season and the service was very helpful and gave great insight of the menu. I started off with a **** Mary and also got an Oyster Shooter. There was juicy shrimp on the **** Mary and was spiced well. The Sea Scallops were divine with a nice sweetness and savory finish. We ended up choosing the Seafood Gumbo and Fish Platter. All options were cooked perfectly and the view of the ocean was top notch. As for food, we kept it light and ordered just a couple of small items. The oysters were excellent; I believe it was half a dozen for $21. The poke, however, was fairly pricey for what you receive – just a small portion and a few wonton chips. One notable change since my last visit was the sheer number of flies buzzing around this time. I'm not sure if it's seasonal or something else, but there were quite a few during both visits. Although the restaurant had small table fans and candles lit, it didn’t seem to help much. Just a heads up if you're allergic to flies or uncomfortable with them; they were quite prevalent in the bar area.
The views at Avalon are incredible, especially when sitting outside by the water. Although our family had a rocky start upon arrival, our server Nancy was immensely patient and friendly, which really helped lift our spirits. I loved my cocktails—the Cucumber Mojito and the Captain's Mai Tai were both crafted perfectly. We also tried the Breakfast Sandwich and the Moonstone Scramble, both of which were delicious. Like many places on Catalina Island, the food prices are on the higher side, but considering our overall experience and what we had at other restaurants, I would definitely recommend this spot.
We enjoyed a lovely dining experience situated over the water, offering a stunning view of both the marina and the casino. I thought to myself that the scenery and atmosphere couldn't be better. I ordered the clam chowder and fish and chips. The clam chowder was rich in flavor and wonderfully creamy, while the fish and chips were crispy, with the fish tasting exceptionally fresh. Overall, the food was outstanding. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, making for a pleasant experience overall.
Place was super clean and decorated nicely. Workers were very kind. Food definitely overpriced though. Cheesecake was delicious and the Buffalo Milk is the official drink of Catalina Island. However I did go to a different bar on the island that served the drink and it tasted 10 times better with way more alcohol and an actual banana in the drink than the banana liqueur at Bluewater grill. They have multiple locations, including the amazing Blue Water Grill in Newport. The menu is fantastic, the food is delicious, and the service is good—definitely a more consistent experience compared to some other restaurants in the area. They offer a lovely patio as well as interior seating. It’s wonderful and always a delight!
