I enjoyed both the breakfast and the birthday lunch that I had recently that I wrote straight to Trip Advisor to recommend Cafe Rouge in Bury St Edmunds. The food was not run of the mill' but was well cooked with imaginative touches and just the right amount. My friend and I chose three different items on the menu and we were both delighted and our waitress was charming and helpful. Your booking system is so easy and I had the opportunity to ask to sit in a side room as I can hear better. When we arrived we were automatically shown to a table where I had asked without any fuss. It was a thoroughly good experience which I shall repeat.
We do visit other Cafe Rouge establishments where the service has been good but I don't think we've ever had satisfactory service in Bury St Edmunds, which is our local restaurant. Here it always seems to take an inordinate length of time to get our meal, regardless of how busy it is. On this occasion, there was only a handful of customers dining but we had to wait over minutes for our meal. The waitress had to be asked for things that should have been supplied as a matter of course, e.g. Steak knives. We also had to ask more than once for other items, e.g.drinks. Poor Show!!
Wait staff are experts at avoiding eye contact, even when clearing a table right next to yours. All I wanted was another milk for my son! Really though, this is your average chain restaurant. There is nothing to really complain about while at the same time there is nothing to leave a real impression. And I had to laugh when the woman taking our orders wasn't familiar with the French words used on the menu, like confit and pommes. I would eat here again

When we arrived the place was buzzing, but people gradually left and so did our waitress. After our first 2 courses we felt a bit ignored and missed our waitress. The food was very good but the service fell short

The service was fantastic but the food did not live up to the price tag. I had snails for starters, of which I got for and the bouillabaise lacked flavour. The dessert was okay, but sadly nothing to shout about. Based on the quality of food and the price of each dish, I don't think I will be going back anytime soon.

I was very disappointed in the quality of the desert Eton Mess. This was so small, had no fruit in it and was basically a few pieces of meringue with a small amount of ice-cream and some fruit cordial. My friend and I did complain pleasantly and were given our coffees on the house a small gesture.
Our evening for my husbands birthday was great. The food was excellent, the cocktails were fabulous and the staff were a credit to customer service so all in all a very enjoyable evening and cant wait to go back.

The standard of food is consistent and very good. We visit often and really appreciate the vouchers.
