Despite its overall 4 out of 5 rating, recent reviews of this place have been mostly 1 out of 5, and it's easy to understand why. Caffè Nero used to be my favorite high street coffee chain, so it's disappointing to see its rapid decline over the past year. Customer reviews once regularly gave it 4 and 5-star ratings, but now it has become quite shabby. The staff seem to have a lackadaisical attitude, with some even wearing scruffy clothing. The seats are dirty, tables take a long time to be cleared, and there are knotted bin bags and mop buckets left out in the shop. I've even had drinks served in dirty mugs. Stopped by for coffee and chose a tea cake to go with it. The service was slow and slapdash at best. We went outside were tables we not clean I used wipes to clean it). We sat drinking coffee waiting for teacakes. One server took the numbered block away. I continued to look inside cafe. One server was walking round drinking from a tumbler, one was by the coffee machine a third did nothing but chat. After 30mins we finished the coffee still no teacakes but as we had to leave we asked for money back only then did they offer to cook the teacakes that we had paid for 30 minutes before. As a regular in this Nero, I have seen a few staff changed over the years, but it must be said that since Emma has taken over as store manager the store is impeccable. The service is fantastic, the shop is spotlessly clean and the coffee is perfect and beautifully made. She always makes an effort with the customers and gets to know all the regulars, and even if you're not a regular she does her best to make you feel welcome and have a pleasant experience and it would seem the same is rubbing off on the new recruits too which is good to see. After years of pleasant and nice service this particular branch is on a downward slope. There seems to be an attitude crept in among the staff and it seems to be stemming from the manageress. You can put one maybe two visits down to her having a bad day but when the scowling looks and eye rolls become more frequent you begin to take it personal. Slamming spoons onto the tray and purposely putting an obscene amount of cream on my drink was pettiest thing I’ve ever seen. But it seems recent reviews suggest it’s not us that has had issues. So there’s a problem somewhere. If she doesn’t like customers or money into the till then maybe she should consider a different career path. Réservez une table maintenant
Went into the cafe to get sugar for coffee about to be bought other friend had a coffee from a different place but only took 2 sugars because I was going to buy something workers started giving us glaring looks walks towards us raising her voice saying are we buying anything at this point I didn’t want to buy anything because the way we where greeted in a rude not well mannered way so I said not buying anything now and she continues to walk away saying “this is not a charity” all because we where getting sugar ready for are coffees and could not even get it at the end because we felt highly unwanted and uncomfortable.
If you're looking for excellent coffee served by attractive baristas who are dedicated to their craft, while enjoying the lively atmosphere of St. Helens passing by, all in a cozy glass-fronted corner shop, then this coffee shop is perfect for you. I couldn't find any faults, and I have to say it's not only the top chain coffee shop in St. Helens but one of the best I've visited in Europe. It's a bold claim, but there you have it.
St Helens these days is a strange old place. Beggars and druggies parade up and down Church Street. However I can sit with my large skinny latte and have a read and forget about the council ruining the town. The staff are lovely and I have noticed they really help the elderly customers.
The staff at this restaurant are extremely friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The vibes are very relaxed and enjoyable. However, there was an incident where I went to the restroom and my coffee was mistakenly taken. Other than that, everything was great. Réservez une table maintenant
