I ordered a veal sandwich, which was tasty, but it didn't come close to the quality of those from other locations downtown or at Queensway. While this spot is convenient, that’s about where the positives end. Unfortunately, the staff—especially the two young women at the front, one blonde and one brunette—made the experience quite unpleasant. They treated me as if I were a burden and their lack of professionalism was disappointing. It's a shame because they have a good product, but the front-of-house service really detracts from the overall experience. I hope this helps anyone who is hungry.
California Sandwiches maintains a commendable level of consistency across its various locations. It’s my favorite spot for Italian sandwiches. My usual order is the hot chicken with cheese and mushrooms, and I've never been let down by their food. However, the prices are a bit steep for a sandwich shop, and all toppings come at an additional cost. My chicken sandwich with cheese and mushrooms ended up being around $18 after tax. I would still enjoy it, but I would likely go more often if the prices were more reasonable.
The staff at this restaurant was incredibly unprofessional. They were rude, openly argued with one another, and provided poor customer service. In particular, the blonde woman preparing the sandwiches around noon today treated an older colleague disrespectfully and created a rather uncomfortable atmosphere. I'm quite disappointed, especially since the food isn’t anything special either. It's unfortunate that there aren’t many dining options nearby, forcing us to endure this kind of service.
Regardless of how many times I visit the Chesswood location, I am consistently greeted by some of the most unhappy employees I've ever encountered. Today, when I asked for a toothpick, the server rolled her eyes at me. I thanked her, and she responded with an obvious sigh of annoyance. Additionally, this location is the only one that shortchanges you on the veal, serving half a piece instead of the two pieces offered at other locations. Kid-friendliness: Your child will happily finish an entire sandwich, even without a kids' menu. This restaurant is welcoming to everyone. Give it a try, and you won’t regret it! Parking: There is a large open space for parking, so you'll have no trouble finding a spot. It's conveniently located on the corner of Chestwood and Sheppard Ave, near an office building and a coffee shop. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes, it is wheelchair accessible.
The restaurant has plenty of seating indoors and ample parking available in the industrial area. Overall, I was initially leaning toward giving this a 4.5 out of 5 due to the extra cost of toppings, but I think the base price for the sandwich is reasonable considering its size and the increasing menu prices we often encounter. One downside is that they don’t have tap-to-pay options; you can only insert or swipe your card or pay with cash.
The food was excellent, but I ordered cheese on my chicken sandwich and it was forgotten. I didn’t ask for a replacement, but I probably should have since they announced it when I placed my order, particularly because I paid for it. Additionally, the service was a bit slow, and some of the toppings were quite pricey, especially the breaded ones.
This restaurant has always been a favorite of mine from childhood, but I have to say that the original downtown locations are far superior. The staff at the Chesswood location is the rudest I've ever come across, and the portion sizes for the meat are the smallest of all the locations. I won't be going back.
