Have known about the Champany for years and it's good reputation so we decided to try the Chop Ale House first. I'm afraid to say it was a big disappointment. My order of sirloin was over done, medium more than medium rare and the...fat was charcoal. The quality of the steak was not great, fairly chewy, we get much better steak from our butchers in the Borders. The service was exceptionally quick, no sooner had you finished your last mouthful plates were whisked away. In fact we were actually asked twice if we had finished when we clearly had not. Dropped in here for a friend retirement lunch. It was really a late lunch and had the place to ourselves. A friendly welcome and give a choice of any of the person tables. Staff took our drinks order and retuned soon after but...were happy to let us catch up before ordering food. Only two had starters and we both really enjoyed the french onion soup. Our mains arrived and we were all really pleased with our selections. The portions were generous. My Boerewors (South African sausage) was excellent, The staff were attentive, they had to be we were the only ones there. We were so looking forward to going out for our anniversary. I ordered a T Bone steak, medium. It looked great when it arrived but was all bone and fat and still raw in the middle. Even the steak knife struggled to get through it....It arrived on a cold plate which is a pet hate of mine. We had a bowl of chips between which were great but once again arrived on a cold plate therefor half way though our meal we were eating cold chips. My wife had a burger which she enjoyed, I wish I had had the same. We were sitting in reception area with my wife sitting facing a wall so all in all not a nice experience. We could not wait to get out...
We are regulars as are my Mum and Dad , my brother and sister in law (not so the the kids) at the Chop and Ale house... today was a special occasion for Mums Margo kindly organised the Breakfast room for of us...to enjoy the experience. Food as always exceptional quality and tasty. Service from start to finish faultless, the local team always make this a great place to visit. The location, decor, service always makes this a nice place to eat... thanks for making this a great birthday.

went twice over the weekend, the rib-eye steak blue was fantastic, the red wine adorable, great service, nice and quite, fish cakes starters lovely. One of the best steakhouses I have been to, made to feel really welcomed by everyone there
Place was cosy but I wouldn't be rushing back. The chicken breast was fine as was the burger but nothing special. The chips were lovely however. We had a pot of tea each which was lukewarm and which was only enough for person.
Went to the Chop and Ale House today after my daughters graduation. Lovely cosy restaurant, busy but seated straight away. Attentive friendly staff and class food. Highly recommend.
Not a massive choice of menu, but the food is beautiful. The surroundings also add to the experience lovely little place would be ideal for a romantic meal.

Have visited this place many times and food always consistently good. Burgers are really tasty and the chips are just delicious. Staff always attentive.
Amazing regular place to eat.Steaks burgers. class.if it’s a special occasion or a monthly treat.It’s fresh quote a menu.But never been disappointed.
