We headed out in the car from Germany for France for a romantic Valentine 's Day lunch. We had no direction other than that. We decided on Metz, and I hit TripAdvisor to see what the restaurant recommendations were. I liked the look of Coco Grill, and punched the address into the GPS. We parked in the underground car park near the Galleria and headed over to the river. Just a short walk later we ended up at the lovely little restaurant just a block from the river. Besides the TripAdvisor recommendation, another sign of a very busy place was the phone number on the window just under the word 'Reservations ' (in French, not so different from English . The third sign we were in for a treat was...

A small local restaurant, a hidden gem in the heart of Metz. The young waiter (we assumed a family member) welcomed us with a friendly smile and the owner had a natural warmth about her; we felt immediately at home. Most of the other diners were locals and clearly regulars. The menu is limited, but everything we had was gorgeous, and the Charlotte au Chocolat at the end was to die for. The portions were generous and the price reasonable. We came here twice during our week in Metz and if we had discovered the Coco Grill earlier we would have come more often and eaten our way through the menu. It was a great find: simple, good and friendly. Highly recommended!

We arrived one minute after the end of lunch time, but after consultation with the kitchen staff they decided to serve us none the less. This attitude is typical: helpfull and trying to give you a good time. We had a dish with cold meats, good quality, with pommes soufflé and melted Munster cheese. It was delicious! Nice strong mustard, good wine and fine coffee. Relaxed athmosphere, other customers who were clearly locals wished us a good trip.

It doesn't look like much on the outside, but inside you will find a friendly, cozy, family run restaurant with excellent food. We had a bonus of having a small, friendly dog greet us at the front door. It must have belonged to someone on the staff it left after awhile. The other diners were locals, and also said hi as we came in. Great food (we both had duck), and good wine, too. It was our best meal in Metz, and we would definitely return.
