Stopped for lunch at El Gallego as it looked promising from the outside. All the empty tables were still dirty as the covers have not been removed by the staff. Having sat down and and after waiting about 8-10 minutes I had to go to the counter to place the order, despite having waived at the seemingly busy waiter several times. I ordered a pork steak and a beer. The latter was cold but the food was not the best memory. The meat was overly greasy and hard, and the french fries were soaking in oil or grease. Overall I would not recommend the place, unless you are looking for bad service and bad food :
Unfortunately, there is not much choice in the north end of Algeciras, but this place looked promising. When the paella arrived it looked beautiful, decked out in seafood. Unfortunately it was terribly over-salted, so all possible flavor was lost. We sat inside, but unfortunately it is open to the patio where there were several smoking customers, including employees. The smell of smoke could not be escaped. The wine and olive tapas were good and the service was fair; they certainly seemed to favor service for the patio where there appeared to be many regulars.
outstanding food and service. we had a rhombo fish, served with vegetables and served at the table, which I would rank among my top 4 fish dishes ever. (among fresh caught fish, grilled and served in palm leaves in the Maldives, my wife's fish soup and fish prepared at Trattoria di Federico, Sicily, where the seafood literally tried to walk off the plate). Can highly recommend El Gallego. We were very positively surprised, because we did not know of the restaurant beforehand and the setting was unassuming. The price was right and affordable.
