This is the third year in a row we have had our office Christmas party at Griesbauer. This is a traditional restaurant that has been in the same family for a long time, authentically country style a ways outside of town. Its claim to fame is fried chicken, like many other restaurants of its kind in Austria and the chicken is indeed excellent. There is also Wiener Schnitzel and cordon bleu. Fresh water fish is available, not breaded. The only option for vegetarians is breaded and fried vegetables. The portions run to the very generous. The side salads are very tasty, also generous. ...you might enjoy it - if not, tough luck! It happened to me twice in a row that we prebooked a certain table, only to learn on arrival that our table was given to some of their regular bussi-bussi customers. But according to their management no problem, as all of their tables are "ok" - so where's the problem? Also tried their garden...big mistake - their untrained and inexperienced service staff walk by dirty tables emty handed, they have no idea who just arrived, who needs a menu or even is ready to order - all the while leaving dirty dishes from previous customers on the tables in front of new arrivals even after having eventually taken the order, walking away emty handed yet again. The Gasthaus Griesbauer is a great traditional restaurant in the green belt of Graz. This place is located at the city limits therefore very idyllic when it comes to nature. Here you can have a perfect time out from busy city life. You will get many of the traditional and authentic local food of the Styrian/Austrian cuisine. When the weather is right you can even sit outside in the fine guest garden with many tables under the trees. As for meal, we had a Breaded Fried Chicken with Bread Dumpling and a Fried Liver with Jam and of course we had a table in the patio under the trees. Big and very attractive playgrounds for the Kids, great Food, small menue, good Drinks at average Prices (low for a Suburban area). Due to Sunday afternoon and nice weather the place was packed with People so the Service was a Little slow but that did not affect the moods since everything else was perfect!
We have visited Graz about 4 times now and always make a point of going to greisbauer for the wonderful chicken! It is the best we have ever had. The place is authentic country style austrian just how I like it. This is not a tourist place just a country guesthouse serving good honest food.
