I was looking for German food in traditional style. The restaurant was able to provide me that. I have been visited it 6 times during a business trip, and I have not been disappointed even once. Service is fast. Waiters are polite. There is English menu or waiters can help with translation from German. Beer is cold and good. Dishes were very tasty, balanced, reasonably spiced. Meat was very soft and aromatic. Side dishes just ideally fit. Suggest try "Wiener Tafelspitz mit Birnen - Meerrettichsauce, Kartoffelkloß, Wildpreiselbeeren und Salatteller", just perfect. I will visit that place definitely when in Herzo next time.
Consistently delicious Franconian cuisine, heartily recommended. The whole menu is good. The service can seem aloof, but that's typical in Germany; catch the waiter's eye if you want something. Bring cash, plastic is no good here. The place has a nice, grapevine-shaded patio. Visits have been couples, friends, business and solo, but the Tripadvisor pigeonholes don't allow for multiple choice. Oh well. Zum Roten Ochsen is a good place for a reliably good dinner. ps there should be a service rating between "average" and "very good' on Tripadvisor. You don't need both "poor" and "terrible" on a five point scale.
not recommended for the following reasons: 1. we were served stinking "cojau zander" filets, returned and accused despite complaining (in the chef)! the only one that found interesting the fish was the swarm with their greenish shimmering back part, but after returning the food also disappeared. 2. herrentoilette shortly after opening still stretched with excrement there goes one of the appetit. 3. Manschette with warmed knock and soothed too much fat afterwards I was plagued by the rest of the evening of nausea and dizziness. Conclusion: I have already eaten for the half of the price in some big ones.
I like that this restaurant have actually limited choice of meals and I do not get stressed when I have to select. My favorite is "Wiener Tafelspitz mit Birnen - Meerrettichsauce, Kartoffelkloß, Wildpreiselbeeren und Salatteller" (here I agree with another reviewer!) This is beef. I sometimes come over just to have a Leberknöddelsuppe, which is perfect there. They have a garden for the warm seasons to sit outside. I would recommend especially for visitors who want to taste local cuisine. We go there on average once in 2 months with my family and 2 small kids. They also have a kids menu.

My sister, niece and I had lunch here. We had different dishes: "wiener art", spätzle, potato pancakes with blue cheese, each served with salad. Everything was well portioned and delicious. Our server was helpful and pleasant. We're already planning to return for dinner on the bier garten when the weather clears up later this week.
We have been to the Roten Ochsen quite a few times with friends and most recently with business colleagues as we live nearby. The food is nice, but the service can be quite off putting and the decor is very plain and simple. Go there for a hearty Sunday dinner, but take the cheer with you!
We had a stop there during over small sight seeing tour around Herzogenaurach. Service was good the the food we ordered also - just something to drink, soup and sweets. Its located directly on the market. To sum it up it was a nice stop. Try it yourself.
The food is plentifull and good. Had the salat which was very good and The roasted pork shoulder which is a regional dish which was superb. As all german retsaurants the beer is fantastic. Problem is the decor is a turnoff, with cold tables and floors.

Good place to have a dinner in Herzo. Nice atmosphere and well done dishes. Not a big variety of meals, but you can always find something for you. Good it terms of price and quality. Small choice of local traditional Bavarian meals.
