This was our sixth trip to Berchtesgaden but the first time we'd had self-catering facilities, which meant we ate out less often than usual - and were therefore more particular about the restaurants we chose. The only place we chose to dine out for evening meals during our stay was the Watzmann. We've visited before and the cosy atmosphere, traditional decor, friendly service and very good food always bring us back. This visit was in a very snowy week in January and it was quieter than usual inside - we were dining alone by about 8.30pm on both occasions. However, this didn't affect the friendly welcome by the lady who is also the owner - who always has a chat with us, despite our halting Ge...
We stopped here for lunch and we were not disappointed. It was a very traditional Austrian meal. We got beer (of course) and that was amazing. Then we ordered husband got the schnitzel and I got a Austrian meat plate (cannot remember what it was called). The service was really good and I believe the owner was the server. The food tasted homemade and very fresh. The servings were huge and after we ordered arrived very fast. The inside of the place looks like it would have 100 years ago (in my mind) and we liked that aspect very much. Also a few locals were having lunch there so of course it had to be good. All in all would return to this place. Delicious food!
Had dinner there and the outstanding feature of this restaurant is the attentive and very friendly service by a lady who seems to own the place. Setting is cozy and rustique and with a very authentic bavarian touch. Food we had was not bad at all but also nothing to cheer about. Obviously honestly cooked but with a lack of the special something. I would leave that to every customer to judge by themselves. The restaurant is clean and I recommend this for its service and setting.
