We eat at the Gerstners Landhaus on a Sunday evening. We chose to go there as a trip out of Vienna, after discovering that some City Centre restaurants close on Sunday (online same day booking was possible). What a good choice! Grinzing is a very atmospheric village....totally different from the city. It is easy to get to if you have a travel card.. Bus 38A from Heiligenstadt at the end of U4 or tram 38 from the Ring. Both routes take about 30 mins from Vienna centre. Gerstners is not the nearest Inn from the bus/tram stop... a few minutes walk up the hill..... but it proved an excellent choice. The building was obviously very old and atmospheric. We were excellently looked after by pleasant...

While Grinzing may be known for boisterous crowds of tourists inebriated by the heady new wine, the real "Heurige" experience is low-key: you bring a picnic, or order a meal, and taste the local wine in a quiet garden. This is the place for such an experience. It may be more crowded when the new wine comes in during autumn, but in early August we encountered nothing but sedate locals (judging from their accents) enjoying the fine (and fortunately, acoustic) music of a violinist and accordionist performing old Viennese songs (a bit schmaltzy, but that's part of the experience). I have been to Grinzing a few times and my general impression is the restaurants and heuringen were all tourist traps . It was our last night in Vienna and I had invited a few friends out for a meal . We took Tram 38 to Grinzing and I preempted everyone not to expect too much re the food . We stumbled upon this gem purely by accident. We were all very impressed not only with the food but also the good selection of wine and the warm attentive service, a far cry from restaurants in central ViennaAll of us had a most memorable time and enjoyable experience. We particularly loved the steak tartare and lamb . Also loved the ambience. Highly recommended

Gerstners Landhaus is not just a restaurant, it is an experience. It is located in a beautiful village outside the city center that reeks of charm. A picture-postcard sort of place with excellent gruner veltliner wine (or riesling, if you are so inclined) and good food. We were there during a great season - the heart of the summer - and so ate in the garden surrounded by plants and beauty. One of the highlights of our trip to Vienna.
