I must express my disappointment with the food and service at this restaurant. I had been eager to try it for a while, but when we arrived, we were the only patrons there. My husband ordered crab rangoon and Tom kha soup. The crab rangoon was overly sweet, almost like a dessert. I opted for the fried chicken skin starter, which was supposed to come with a sauce. When I asked the waitress about it, she claimed it didn't come with sauce, despite it being listed on the menu. I also ordered khao poo soup, which arrived with a thin, watery, flavorless broth. Han Lao recently opened in Brentwood, and on our first visit, we opted for some finger foods accompanied by sticky rice. We enjoyed the following dishes: fried chicken skins, Lao sausage with jeow bong, a trio of jeow, Lao-style papaya salad, chicken larb, and short ribs. Every dish was delicious and bursting with flavor in every bite. Since we recently relocated to Missouri, we were thrilled to discover a Laotian restaurant after following its construction and eagerly awaiting its opening. I absolutely love curry, but I've primarily experienced Thai curry until now. Today, I decided to try Laotian curry, and it was amazing! I ordered the yellow curry with chicken, which had significantly less liquid compared to Thai curry. It was a thick mixture of chicken, potatoes, carrots, and curry sauce. I opted for the spiciest version they offered (though I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re as fond of spicy food as I am; it was definitely hot!), and it truly hit the spot. Additionally, the staff was incredibly friendly— the guy behind the counter was cheerful and authentic.
I LOVE curry, but I've mostly only had Thai curry. I decided to try Laotian Curry today and it was fantastic. I had the yellow curry with chicken. There was much less liquid than I had before with Thai; it was a slurry of chicken, potatoes, carrots, and curry sauce. I got it as spicy as they could make it (which I do not recommend unless you're as crazy about spicy foods as I am, it is certainly hot) and it hit the spot so well. Delicious food! I'll definitely come back soon! My friends warned me that it's hard to get in and out during a 30-minute lunch break, but I found that ordering online and picking up my meal to take back to work works perfectly. The portion sizes are quite generous when dining in; they might be a little smaller for takeout, but there's still more than enough.
