Hawkers Lane - Réserver une table

There’s a lot to be said about Hawkers Lane, good street food but lacks complexity.It’s an interesting business model in that it’s situated in a quiet street opposite Newport station and so depends on foot traffic from commuters and leaflet/Menu letterbox drops to advertise its existence. Its hours are limited, doesn’t accept cards (cash only) has one table and a window bench/stool type seating arrangement, pick up only and doesn’t do home delivery.It’s a nice neat set up, well set out with an open view into the kitchen area and a speedy 15 - 20 minutes for the order to be made up, 7-8 staff, 4-5 were in the kitchen. We have been meaning to try food from here since it opened but our friends told us it was terrible so it took awhile to visit!!Finally we decided to give it a go and it was the worst decision we ever made!!!We ordered - Dumplings, Satay chicken, Roti bread, Nasi Goreng, drunken chilli chicken and stir fried beef and vegetables the bill came to $71.50 for pick up.The dumplings had no meat in them, the satay chicken skewers were hard as a rock, the Nasi goreng was filled with oil, stir fried beef had no sauce or flavour it was like dirty dish water and the drunken chilli chicken was edible but had a couple pieces of meat and the rest was capsicum and left a horrible after taste!!!Cannot believ...

I have been here a few times. The first time it seemed they were still setting up, but the food was tasty and true to the flavours of Malaysia. More recently, I visited and see they are in full swing and quite popular. The shop is nicely presented and the staff friendly. Again, I'm impressed by the quality and taste of the food. They mainly cater to takeaway and being near the station this works well. However, they have a small amount of seating if you want to eat there.

Hawkers Lane is a welcome addition to the Newport food scene. Fresh, tasty, very reasonably priced. Great staff and swift professional service. Gado gado was delicious, but could be spicier. Overall a great spot for a local meal.

Great food, friendly fast service and reasonably priced. I have tried a number of their dishes now including; the beef rendang, Nasi lemak chicken, mamak mee goreng and Kway Teow all were excellent.
