Now, I do not give 5 stars lightly and, at first blush, the place is old, it is rustic and sure isn't wheelchair friendly, but the food and the service are outstanding. My son and I braved the 20 minute drive from Calgary to see what the hype about the Heartland was all about. While my son had been here before with my wife before a theatre production just across the street, this was my first time here.We started with an order of mussels (on special with $5 off) this day. Very nice. loads of mussels in a cream sauce with two large pieces of grilled bread for dipping. yummy! I also had the daily soup, a shrimp chowder, that came in a large bowl, I expected a cup or small dish, but this was huge. Tasty yes, but on the lukewarm side when it arrived.I ordered the elk burger, which was amazing. The meat itself is drier than your typical beef, but the sauce, the green things, the bacon and the brioche bun together made it taste wonderful. It also came with a large heaping of saffron rice, almost a risotto. After the mussels, I could only eat half and took the other half home for a future meal. My son had the 48 hours braised veal cheeks, so tender you could cut it with a fork. He, also, took half of his home with him.For dessert we shared an ok and not outstanding creme brulee.Along with a coffee, a glass of Riesling and an iced tea, the bill, before tip, came to $82.If you go, and you should, be aware that the portions are very large, so I suggest you skip the appetizers, or only order several appetizers and skip the mains. My only complaint is that I had reserved a table on Opentable and it gave me only three options, 7:45, 8:00 or 8:15, and, when we arrived for out 7:45 reservation, we were told that the kitchen would close at 8:00pm! Obviously and Opentable issue here.
