I don't understand how people think its over priced? You are inner city and right on the water, most venues in the city CBD are the same or more expensive. Unlike some, when my friends and I dine out we go for an experience and I feel the James Hotel provided that for us, as well as fantastic food and a great selection of drinks.My only negative feedback would be the menu is a bit outdated as there a few items now not available, in the busiest time of year when it counts the most they seem to be doing some type of table restoration which I don't understand them doing it now, surely there was plenty of time, last thing was the tall guy and the younger guy that were working did a fantastic job...
Was staying a the Sheraton around the corner on a work trip. Needed a good local to drink in every night. Tried this place a few times giving the benefit of the doubt, but consistently came to the same conclusion. The beers were the most...expensive I've ever paid in Melbourne which is one of the reasons the place is so empty. It is tired, well in need of a refurb, has sticky carpets, and lacks any character. Problem is am sure because the place has such a bad reputation, can't imagine there is the money to re-decorate it and whilst dropping the beer price would increase trade, it would take a long time for it to lose its current bad reputation. Come here for the beer! I only like this place because of the Squire beer. The food is okay and for the price you want more than okay. It is a tired pub with the carpets worn through, dust on the chair legs and rough scratched tables. The ambience isn't really there not terrible but it could be great with a few modifications. Overall, the pub is understaffed, needs some money spent on it and some live bands or other entertainment (Channel 9 is not pub entertainment). But I can forgive all of that because they serve Australia's best commercial beer.
Love the James!!!. I have been coming to James Squire for over a year now, and I have only had great service and delicious food!! The staff make me feel like part of the their family and I have made wonderful friends here. The food is fantastic, especially the calamari and the parma. My favourite, The Lash!! All my friends that I have taken here have always left with a smile! Thanks to all the crew at James Squire!!

Roast of the day. Wow finally a place that does a roast on a Sunday. I called into James Squire on Sunday 9th March and ordered roast pork. I was given a very generous serving of roast pork with crispy vegetables. Beautifully cooked, the crackle was delicious as were the kipfler potatoes. I will be back soon. Good parms. Just a good honest pub, slightly expensive due to location, but have eaten here several times and never been disappointed. <br/ <br/ Parma's are yum [there are 6 types] and steak sandwich the best I've ever had. <br/ <br/ Service little slow when very busy, but to be expected on a Friday/Saturday night.
Best pub in Melbourne. Great food served quickly. I definitely recommend the calamari. The beer selection is awesome from imported to craft. Service is amazing. Best of all DOG friendly on the terrace. Has plenty of space for events as well.
Had lunch here on Sunday and loved it!! Sitting in the sun with a couple of quiet beers to wash down the amazing steak sandwich... Couldn't get much better! Happy days
