I've been looking forward to dinner with Joe Beef for a long time. After entering the restaurant, the staff was polite and ensured that your glasses were filled. Looked at the menu and realized very few elements on the menu, but the worst of all I saw, especially a seafood menu with very little beef. My wife had lamb and said she never tasted lamb as good as that. I took the files and ate only half. It wasn't good at all. My salad was delicious, Dessert was dying. But as I found out, the menu always changes. So if like beef, I suggest you go somewhere else to get the meat you enjoy. Anyway, I experienced that when I left. Oh and by the way.... they don't serve cream for your coffee just milk...
I think like most people who venture to Joe Beef, our expectations were just way too high from watching the exploits of Anthony Bourdain and his visits and partying with founder David McMillan . I will say that we had exceptional service here, and enjoyed our meal, but its very expensive. I think the price point is set above the quality of the food, as demand continues to exceed supply (of tables). Its a quaint restaurant off the beaten path a bit easy to get to and very cosy. Morels (which are hard to come by for us in the US) were very tasty, and I recommend the excellent fresh oysters those were highlights. Perhaps rather than a full dinner, you might get a drink and a couple small plates...
Without the excellent service we received, I would give him a lower rating. While everything was well cooked, my sweet bread duck was completely spiced. I was too embarrassed (for them to ask for salt and pepper shakers. Luckily, I used my wife's lemon to brighten her up. For over $300 Americans, I would have expected more of an attempt to garnish. Copped parsley and chives are at best elementary. The lobster spaghetti over which each raves was very heavy and rich. Monochrome and in need of brightness. My daughter ordered a coat hanger that was perfectly cooked. The woman and daughter also loved a 24 layer of cake for dessert (daquoise????? Another small attempt to garnish would go a long wa...
Wow! What a horrendous experience! They sat us at the bar in the back which was fine with us. We ordered butternut squash soup which was good. We ordered the endive salad which we expressed we don’t like goat cheese and the bartender said it was just a mild taste. It definitely is goat cheese heavy but they immediately took that off our bill. We ordered the beef bourguignon it was accompanied with garlic butter egg noodles. Beef bourguignon is a slow decadent dish the meat should fall apart. That was not the case the dish was disconnected and had no flavor. On top of that maybe you should educate the staff that just because someone speaks English doesn’t mean we don’t speak French. We didn’t...
Greeted nicely at the door. Lead to a great cozy and romantic table by the window. A perfect start to a lovely evening. Waitstaff was attentive and knowledgeable. They showed pride in the menu in describing or translating from French to English each dish if necessary. Escargot were loaded with garlic and butter. Toasted baguette to soak it all up. Yum. Endive salad with a slight blue cheese dressing. Very delicately flavored. Duck breast, thick cut in a crisp skin and a flavorful black peppercorn sauce. Great sauce to dip your frites and make your own poutine. If you dare. Sorry no dessert to report here but I’m sure if you have the room it is more than excellent. Enjoy.
First things first, my partner and I didn't expect that Joe Beef would have a Michelin star so my partner and I's expectation were close to none. Secondly, The service was impeccable! We were able to do reservation at very last minute and they welcomed us with such warmth and enthusiastic vibe. Lastly, THE FOOD. As a chef for almost a decade now and have been a hundreds of restaurants and I can honestly say that Joe Beef is legit and more. The experience was stellar and I 100% recommend it to every single one who loves to eat good food.
A bunch of people suggested we feed here in Montreal. Extremely underwhelming, especially for the price. Both beef and veal dishes were cooked in a medium to good way (not asked for cooking preferences, and we have recognized this by the fact). We were brought twice the wrong bottle of wine. Unfortunately, this restaurant did not meet our expectations.
For the first time Joe Beef was terrible, my duck was cold and all I could taste was salt! The razor clam was simply that, one chopped up clam, tasteless! and $15! I was even disappointed in the cocktail! It was in a 4 oz glass I think, maybe 2 sips, sorry Joe Beef, what used to be exceptional is now simply awful. Will never go back
