Konditorei Cafe Schubert

Das Café Schubert ist in der Region bekannt für seinen hervorragenden Kuchen. Außerdem gibt es dort einen Mittagstisch, den vor allem die zahlreichen Senioren des Ortes gerne nutzen. Das hat natürlich Auswirkungen auf die Auswahl der angebotenen Gerichte, deswegen hatten wir uns schon lange nicht mehr dafür interessiert.   Kürzlich kam uns aber zu Ohren, dass in der Küche seit einiger Zeit eine neue Dame des Hauses den Löffel schwingt, und zwar eine aus Thailand. Für uns eine frohe Botschaft, da wir den asiatischen Küchen in (fast allen Ausprägungen sehr zugetan sind. Also sind wir wieder mal hin.   Drinnen sah es immer noch so aus wie früher, besser gesagt wie ganz viel früher. (Allerdings ist nach dem eingangs Gesagten der Druck ja auch nicht besonders groß, die Atmosphäre der Wirtschaftwunderjahre mal hinter sich zu lassen.   Die Wahl zwischen Spaghetti Bolognese und der thailändischen Gemüsepfanne mit Huhn fiel uns natürlich nicht schwer, wir machten dann aber doch große Augen, als Letztere auf dem Tisch stand. Schon vor dem ersten Bissen war zu sehen, dass die Küchenchefin ihre kulinarischen Wurzeln radikal gekappt hat. Thaiküche für Farangs Geschmeckt hat es, wie es aussah, nett und harmlos, aber ohne jeglichen thailändischen Input, was Kräuter, Gewürze, Saucen oder scharfe Currypasten angeht. Allein der gute, klebrige Jasminreis konnte ein wenig asiatisches Flair vermitteln.  Einerseits ist es ja zu gut zu verstehen, dass man das Angebot der Nachfrage anpasst. Mit Kaffir-Limette, Koriander und scharfen Pasten darf man den meisten Gästen sicher nicht kommen, aber Thai-Basilikum, Ingwer oder Galgant könnten doch eigentlich gehen. Andernfalls sollte man dem Gericht einen anderen Namen geben. Pizza geht ja auch nicht ohne Käse und Tomaten. Noch besser wäre es allerdings, wenn man in der Küche etwas mutiger wäre, denn leider ist Asien ja nach wie vor ein gähnend weißer Fleck auf der gastronomischen Landkarte Bad Herrenalbs. Und wem das nicht gefällt, dem bleibt ja immer noch der Rückzug auf Spaghetti Bolognese offen. Beim Rausgehen sind wir dann natürlich noch an der Kuchentheke vorbei. Dass die Torten nach wie vor im Großraum Karlsruhe ihresgleichen suchen, hat uns etwas mit der mittäglichen Ernüchterung versöhnt. Für die gibt es fünf Sterne, für das Mittagessen drei, macht im Mittel vier.

Café Schubert is known for its excellent cake in the region. In addition, there is a lunch table that likes to use the numerous seniors of the place. This has, of course, implications for the selection of the dishes offered so that we have not been interested in it for a long time. Recently we heard that a new lady of the house has been swinging in the kitchen for some time, one from Thailand. For us a happy message, as we are very happy with the Asian kitchens in (almost all of them). So we're back. Inside it still looked like before, better said how much earlier. (But after what was said at the outset, the pressure is not particularly great to leave behind the atmosphere of the economic miracle years. The choice between spaghetti Bolognese and the Thai vegetable pan with chicken was, of course, not difficult for us, but we made big eyes when the latter stood on the table. Even before the first bite it was to be seen that the cook radically captured its culinary roots. Thai cuisine for Farangs It tasted as it looked beautiful and harmless but without Thai input about herbs, spices, sauces or sharp curry pastes. The good, sticky jasmine rice alone could convey a little Asian flair. Firstly, it is too good to understand that demand is adjusted. With Kaffir-Limette, coriander and sharp pastes you cannot come to most guests, but Thai basil, ginger or Galgant could actually go. Otherwise you should give the court another name. Pizza doesn't go without cheese and tomatoes. It would be even better if you were a little braver in the kitchen, because Asia is still a very white spot on the gastronomic map of Bad Herrenalbs. And whoever does not like it, the retreat to Spaghetti Bolognese remains open. When we go out, of course, we're still past the cake counter. The fact that the cakes continue to search in the Greater Karlsruhe area has reconciled us with the common fertility. For them there are five stars, for lunch three, on average makes four.

We stayed in Bad Herrenalb for 5 days and were so impressed by the Schubert Cafe Konditorei we went back 3 times. There is a shop selling a wonderful array of speciality German cakes such as Sachertorte and for a small extra charge these can be served in the adjoining comfortable cafe or the outside seating area. They look as if they will be very sweet but in fact they are perfectly balanced and quite delicious. The staff do not speak English but are friendly and the coffee is good too. Don't miss any opportunity to visit!

We were travelling through the Black Forest and came across this restaurant. We stopped here for coffee and cake. The view is good and the service is good. The restaurant also serves lunch. It only accepts cash as payment, no credit cards.

We started with good intentions by sharing a large salad between two. However we found room for almond-topped apple cake which was excellent. Service was OK.
