... or should I say: Exceptionnellement bon!We walked past this place on Rue Touasse in the early evening and it was jumping! Took a closer look and the food on the tables looked great. We came back 30 minutes later with our traveling partners - half expecting to be turned away - but one of the frantically busy waiters (a charming Vietnamese fellow) politely showed us where to wait while he found us a table. I am delighted to report that our experience(s) with with La Vieille Auberge just got better and better from there. The menu is great value whether you go for the set menu or order individual dishes. The house red & white wine are both excellent - and so is the blonde beer they have on tap.Housed in a traditional St Jean de Luz house, the place has a great feel but that is more about the positive energy exuded by the very capable waiters! And things only get better when the food arrives. Order anything - you won't be disappointed. After visiting the market in the morning and checking out a few other places we came back here for lunch the next day: Superb!Don't get me wrong. St Jean de Luz is a pretty and historic town but IT IS A TOURIST TRAP. La Vieille Auberge just happens to be an oasis of charm and professionalism in a town that is otherwise uncharming and unprofessional.Seek this place out if you find yourself if in St Jean de Luz.Highly recommended!

This restaurant looks out onto two others but the patron beckoned us in and we were not sorry. I had paella which was fine: others had mussels in either chorizo sauce or garlic, small but tasty: and first-rate chips to go with them. Another member of my family had Lotte (monkfish tail); everyone was happy. The patron was charming and staff efficient. Recommended for a simple and very reasonably priced lunch.
