L'Abri du Benques

We enjoyed the food, but the meal was completely spoiled as we were cheated by the staff. We ordered a starter, two mains and a desert. A three course meal was on offer, so when we paid, we expected the bill to come to the price of the formule plus a main. The staff, very cynically, decided to charge us the items we ordered on an a la carte basis. When we challenged this, the waiter initially admitted the error, but then her colleague came over and helped her to concoct a preposterous story that because we had the starter and desert separately, it cannot be included as a formule. To make things worse, the chef came out and claimed that the portions were larger with neither of us having all three courses to ourself, hence they had to charge us more In short, despite the meal being enjoyable, the whole dining experience was let down by the ridiculous and unreasonable attitude of the staff which left a really bad taste in the mouth. Shame!

This restaurant is in a very lovely situation next to a cascade. We didn't book but the staff were friendly and helpful. We had a 6 week old baby with us and nothing was too much trouble, hot water cold water etc. Now the important bit, the food, well what can one say, it was nothing less than amazing! Beautfly cooked and presented. We had the menu du jour so not expensive, fish soup (I want the recipe) my wife had the trout, amazing while my son in law and I had the pork. Absolutely melt in the mouth. Our daughter had lamb cutlets from the carte again delicious. Pudding was again lovely. What can one say? Probably, in my option, the nicest food in the Haute Pyrennes. I am however still looking.

Booked a table here for celebratory Sunday lunch. Arrived at midday and were the only ones in the place and began to be worried. However within half an hour the place was full. Food was very good, tasty and plentiful, and beautifully served. We all had set menu, but they were accomodating enough to change things around if we wanted two starters instead of a main course. Service was very good, professional and efficient without feeling rushed. We had a lovely meal, plenty of wine and bubbly and it came to 100euros per couple which we felt was reasonable for the quality of the food and booze. Would reccomend this place if you are in the area.

The location is stunning, on the edge of the village of La Raillere and right next to a huge waterfall. We hadn't booked and, although it was very well patronised, we were quickly seated. Although there was a menu du jour, which was very reasonably priced, we chose from the extensive menu. The food was superbly presented, gorgeous to eat and very surprisingly low in price. The staff, restaurant and surroundings were so soothing, we didn't want to leave.

This restaurant is one of the best we have ever eaten in. The food was amazing, beautifully presented and delicious. On holiday in Cauterets we ate two lunches and one evening meal - all were excellent value and delicious. The staff were friendly and accommodating. Altogether an excellent experience. Highly recommended.
