The first time we visited the Ancienne Ecole, we were blown away by the cooking for a lunchtime menu. We were looking for a house in the area, but had by then decided to buy over the border in Spain, with regular trips back to France for shopping. (We'd been living elsewhere in France for some 25 years.) It seemed ideal to get a high-quality lunch there as part of a shopping trip. After an abortive attempt at this during their winter closure, we did go for lunch, but it wasn't quite as good as we remembered. There was a problem that day anyway, and what my wife would have wanted had had to be erased from the blackboard at the last minute. The cooking was, however, still top-class and we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. All the same, the wine and some price supplements certainly added up and the bill totalled about €75. That is still not wickedly expensive when you allow for the quality received, but we have found alternatives in the area just as good for similar prices. There are also alternatives, usually with house wine and slightly lower quality, at around half that price. We will still go back on future shopping trips, but probably only once every 3 or 4 trips.
