The "snack" either side of the performance of Tannhäuser, which took place in the castle's Festsaal, was excellent, and much more than our idea of a "snack". Lots of interesting regional dishes in sample sized portions were the feature of the main course. On the second evening, we had a delicious 3-course meal. Both meals were excellent and served in a manner that was friendly but not intrusive. There is a good wine list and, in our experience, the sommelier knows what he's talking about. The only downside was that not all the staff understand "tap-water" as a drink-choice... but, in hindsight, they may have been confused by us using the word "bottle" instead of "carafe".
One only needs to be a modest history buff or a slightly romantic soul to enjoy the Wartburg by itself. If such pleasures are compounded by tasty food, even better. The staff was friendly (they accommodated us as outsiders although dinner was being served to regular hotel guests) and the quality of the food was well above the average of the region; with the spectacular views all over Thuringia included "for free" it was a lovely, unforgettable experience.
The service was extremely friendly, and I particularly like a mixed plate of Thuringian specialties, as well as my main course (I've forgotten, however, what it was). My husband had guinea fowl and was unhappy with it: he said it tasted like supermarket chicken. The local wine was excellent. We ate on the terrace, with a view of the castle and the plain. The main dining room looked nice also and has a large view.
The Restaurant is in a very beautiful building inside the Castle of Wartburg. The view is outstanding. The food is ok. They definitely could be better with service for this upscale, somehow expensive place: no English spoken, a huge amount of flies (yes the insect) bothering us during the lunch.With a better service and more attention to details, it could be a really special place.

The surroundings are warm and impressive. The flexibility of the female manager however is not so impressive. Upon request of the wine list, we were told that this was not possible as it was an evening wine list. The waitress was willing to get it and the wine, but was told by her manager that this was 'nicht erlaubt'. Not the service that is to be expected from a 5 star hotel.
Just underneath the Wartburg castle, the restaurant offers a rather limited selection of dishes, but both the Sauerbraten ("sour roast beef", a German beef specialty) and the catfish (Wels in German) were excellent. They also have a range of wines, including wines from the East German Saale-Unstrut region.
This lovely restaurant has it all: style, views, excellent food, and wines. We were absolutely delighted to enjoy dinner here. The location could not be better with a bonus view across the forests of Thuringia.
very nice restaurant with fantastic view. The dishes are only a small selection of traditional Thuringia cuisine, and only one of the rooms has A/C. This is the place to view the sunset.

Advice to come in this restaurant after excursion. I was satisfied with its service and food, beer and pizza were fine. But pizza making was long time.
Better to select the a la carte option other than the prepaid three or five course option for dinner. Excellent breakfast buffet too
