We visited the Lantern restaurant on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and had a fantastic meal and wonderful experience. We loved the original decor the Lantern boasts and we found out that it has been in the same family for nearly 60 years! The way in which guests are welcomed and the pride and care taken in the food served, you can really tell it's a family run establishment. For our meal, we opted to start with the calamari and garlic mushrooms. Both of these were delicious, but we loved the mushrooms so much we had to order another portion! The establishment has a traditional, family-run vibe with excellent customer service. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and offered to have our coats hung up. Charming dinner spot in the city centre that we heard had a great, long-term reputation. We weren't disappointed. Myself and my wife were recently on holiday in South Africa and had some fantastic steak out there, but the porterhouse at The Lantern was right up there with the best we tasted in SA. Seriously. The portions are huge, you won't go hungry. Everything was fresh, tasty and the mushroom sauce was incredible – my wife was practically drinking it! Delicious food and very reasonably priced given the quality of it. The service is second to none super attentive but very friendly and warm. It's too easy to walk past and barely notice the restaurant is there given it's location above the shops on Whitefriargate but you're missing out if you don't give it a try. The steaks are delicious and there's some lovely fish options.
