We have a holiday home in Brizambourg, a village in Charente-Maritime on the road from Saint Hilaire de Villefranche to Cognac. One of our favourite places to eat is our local bar/restaurant, L’Aquarium, where Georges, the chef and patron, provides a warm welcome, delicious and plentiful regional food and excellent value for money in a bright and cheerful dining room. There are 3 prix fixe lunchtime menus, priced at €12, €18 and €22 (the two latter require 48 hours notice), every day including Mondays and weekends. All are also available for dinner (reservations needed), at a slightly higher price. The price is inclusive of 5 courses (soup, entrée, main course, cheese and dessert), wine and coffee. Typical dishes include fish soup, charcuterie, salade de chevre chaud (warm goat’s cheese on croutons), beef casserole, grilled ham, magret de canard (duck), iles flottantes (a creamy dessert topped with soft meringue), apple flan, creme brulée and chocolate mousse. The more expensive menus offer ingredients such as prawns, scallops, eel and frogs legs. Brizambourg itself is attractive and typically Charentais, and l’Aquarium, well-patronised by local residents and workers, also makes a good stopping-off point for hungry travellers.

On the way south from St Jean d'Angely towards either Cognac or Saintes you can easily go via Brizambourg and it is worth doing to find this remarkable restaurant. It is fantastic value for money; The food is locally sourced and very well cooked. The joy of the place is Georges who takes a personal pride in making sure all the people who eat there thoroughly enjoy their meal. There are no hidden extras - the table d'hote menus at varying prices for different sizes of appetite include a generous amount of wine. The rather unexciting environment is the only weakness but you concentrate on eating so this isn't important and the place is impeccably clean.

We visited this restaurant some years ago and found it very good indeed. Our recent visit was even better. The four course meal includes wine and coffee for less than 14€ and is of a very high standard. The wine was extremely drinkable and the fish soup really superb. It is worth a special visit for lunch.
