In a mercado in the middle of Argüelles, a regular madrileño neighborhood, we found this spectacular mini restaurant in what is basically a market stall. Right before our eyes, the owner prepared for us a mojama (cured tuna)-with-tomato salad that we ate while he made for us, from scratch, arroz con calamares (rice with squid, cooked in squid ink). Lovely, no-frills setting, excellent bread, and a thoughtful selection of drinks. Had torrijas de otoño (sort of French toast topped with bits of wild mushrooms) and the requisite coffee for desert. A local man, a fellow patron at the restaurant, told us this is the best value in Madrid, where rice dishes are plentiful, but not necessary memorable...
