I had visited this restaurant before, and while my initial experience was only average, I decided to give it another chance this year. To my surprise, the food was outstanding. I ordered the trout almondine, and it was truly delicious. My daughter chose the buffalo stew, which was hearty and flavorful. They've recently introduced a patio where guests can eat outside with their dogs, and my dog even received a bowl of ice water. The patio is spacious enough that dogs don’t feel cramped. After hiking to Roughlock Falls, we decided to stop at this restaurant for some coffee and a light snack. I couldn’t pass up the chance to have a freshly made caramel roll drizzled with rich, buttery caramel sauce; it was truly one of the best breakfast pastries I've ever tasted. I also ordered the chislin and eggs, which I had been eager to try during my visit to South Dakota, and they did not disappoint—they were delicious. The service was outstanding, and we enjoyed a delightful meal on the patio, surrounded by stunning forest views and the soothing sound of the waterfall.
I had a fantastic dining experience at The Latchstring! The food was amazing, particularly their signature dishes—the trout almondine (sauce served on the side) and the cinnamon roll. Both were incredibly fresh and served in generous portions. The staff was friendly, even with just two servers working that evening. The restaurant had a cozy vibe, and the music was delightful. The outdoor view was breathtaking, and I can only picture how lovely it must be to dine on the patio during warmer weather. I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area!
The server was rude, which led us to decide against leaving the customary 20% tip. Afterward, the server approached another person at our table—who was paying separately—and angrily demanded that she give a larger tip because we hadn’t left one. This restaurant offers delicious food and features a lovely patio. The service was excellent. It's just a short walk to a stunning waterfall; there are a few hills, but they aren't too difficult, and there are plenty of spots to rest if needed. Spearfish Canyon is absolutely breathtaking, and the restaurant is perfectly situated within it. My ratings are as follows: Food: 4, Service: 4, Atmosphere: 5.
Very good service. Canyon Dip is the best...must try. Country fried steak has changed over the years. It's a little to thick for my liking. Apple cider vodka winter drink is really tasty. I visited Spearfish Canyon Lodge to sample the buffalo stew and cheese curds, and both were delightful. As others have noted, the prices are somewhat steep, but that's understandable given the location. The service was decent, and I would definitely think about coming back.
