Noisy too, with all those people. It appeared that most people knew at least one or two people of each other group in the whole place, which was a nice friendly feeling. Just as I walked down the street a group of about a dozen walked in I was quite surprised that they managed to squeeze me in. It may have been as a result of it being already fairly late, one or two people had recently left, but it was still packed to the seams. I was found a table upstairs, where the noise was even greater, I actually wished I’d taken earplugs! The waiter waitress working the first floor were both whippet slim, no secret why, they’re rushing around all the time. It took a while for the menu to arrive but my...

The Cheval Blanc is probably the best restaurant in Bailleul. It offers Flemish specialties and 70 different beers and ales brewed in France and Belgium. After ordering a glass of the classic trappist Rochefort 8 ale as an aperitif, I had filet mignon de porc with a sauce [a bit too much sauce] made from the local Maroilles cheese, and accompanied it with a glass of Quintine Ambrée, an excellent ale from the town of Ellezelles in Belgium. Instead of a dessert, I picked a cheese platter with generous portions of Maroilles, Wimereux and Ch'tis. Le Cheval Blanc is highly recommended!

A delightful, rustic eating place, that is a joy to have a meal in. Kind, attentive (but not too intrusive) staff, and lots of locals who obviously enjoy eating there regularly always an excellent sign of quality and service. Excellent menu, well priced, and the food? Superb and copious to say the least. You will struggle to eat all they put in front of you if you have a normal appetite. If you want a really authentic French meal, then go to the Cheval Blanc! If you are as lucky as me, you can even park right outside the door.

I was taken there by my niece who lives in this Flemish town. Great decoration, (flemish pub style) superb food. They obviously specialize in local cuisine and it was really good. Highly recommended for unusual fare or if you like to eat in vintage surrounding too.
