Le Cafe du General

Absolutely the worst meal I have ever had in France, and I've been visiting for the past years. Selected a chicken dish with morel mushrooms. The sauce was excellent. The mushrooms a nice touch. The glass of salad leaves ridiculous and the chips were...just chips. Despite being cold I dived in and ate what little chicken there was. My husband's was stone cold in the middle of his chicken and he complained. They took his plate away only to return it minutes later having revved it in a microwave. This seemed only to dry out the sauce and kill the chips. The chicken was only slightly warm inside. It was inedible. We ordered a pichet of white wine which was very pleasant. Until we got the bill! euros for When we queried it we were told it was from a bottle. A bottle of Bordeaux no less. But why send it out in a pichet? Why would you do that? Never in my life has that happened. They open the bottle at the table and then smell the Cork, that's what should happen. But we didn't order a half bottle of Bordeaux we ordered a pichet of white wine. So very angry with their attitude and it spoilt our last night in France.

Nous nous sommes assis en terrasse, la table a coté de nous interpelle le serveur pour se plaindre de l'attente pour prendre la commande, il répond simplement qu'il y a un groupe de 30 personnes à l'intérieur et qu'il manque deux serveurs donc que l'attente sera très longue et qu'il a décidé d'arrêter le service. Il vient ensuite nous voir en disant que l'attente serait longue, on précise donc qu'on veut juste prendre une conso et non manger, il nous répond qu'il ne prend plus personne et qu'il stoppe le service. Lamentable, de une c'est non commercial, ensuite le manque de personnel ne regarde en aucun cas les clients. Si le serveur prend l'initiative seule de refuser du monde qu'il change de métier. C'est lamentable étant de la profession jamais je ne me permettrais de répondre ça aux clients et surtout sur le ton sur lequel il l'a fait.

I had wandered around Old Chartres for a few hours and at lunch time I spotted what I thought might be a good place to drop anchor. I decided on Café du Général in Place Marceau. It turned out to be a great choice. The...waiter who looked after me looked like D’Artagnan. He had a good sense of humour and like me, could speak a little English! There was quite a menu range and I settled for Dos de Cabillaud Sauvage (cod) with vegetables and a local beer. The meal was so well presented and it was delicious. I'm not really a lover of dessert but this young man insisted that I would like the one he suggested. He was right; I finished with a dessert of chocolate “stuff.” Overall it was a very good experience.

Large terrace on Place Marceau to people-watch while sipping on a drink with the locals--if you don't mind the smokers. Varied lunch menu, though no formule so things can get a little pricey if you're on a budget. Good selection of beers, wines cocktails. Cafe...gourmand if you just want dessert. Standard French fair.

Un café à ne pas recommander les serveurs sont désagréables le temps d'attente pour une simple commande et interminable ont as faillit partir avant de commander et les cocktails ne sont pas bon à éviter pour passer un bon moment
