Le Chalut - Réserver une table

We’ve visited this restaurant numerous times in the past and really enjoyed it but never again!! My wife has a gluten allergy and was very polite in explaining (in fluent French) the importance of food allergies. She asked about two specific dishes and was assured they were fine and “pas de problem”. She ordered her meal with reservations and decided to double check with the Manager who confirmed every dish contained gluten. Our third choice of wine finally turned up (the first two being out of stock), and was just plonked on the table without comment or attempt to serve it at all. The meal (Sole Meniure) arrived and was inedible. Over cooked, oily fish, dry rice and cremated vegetables. Our children’s meals weren’t any better at all. When we asked for the bill we challenged the Manager whose comments on the service and the food were “that’s how we do it here”. As a restaurant don’t bother, but for comedy value it’s priceless! (We now realise why there were so many empty tables at 9pm on a Friday night).

Our first visit for some years and thankfully the Chalut is undoubtably back on top form after a lengthy period where things seemed to have slipped badly. We were very pleased to find the restaurant back to its old self, offering exceptional value for money with the fixed price lunch time menu. We were impressed with the scruplious Covid protocols in place. Service was very attentive and there is a very wide choice of dishes on the fixed price menu which changes every day -what more could you wish for?

This restaurant is just lovely. It is run by a brother/sister combo and has always produced sure food. I used the restaurant previously owned by them which was much smaller but they have upscale superbly. The menu is an unchanging constant but the meals never disappoint.

I 've been going to this place since over 30 years. It is an institution. If you have memories of what it used to be. Stay away. These days are gone. What used to be a finer dining type with a pretty good service, has become a Gargote . Very disappointing.

Service was polite and the quantities were generous, but the quality was uneven. One of was happy with the seafood; the other was disappointed by one of the toughest entrecote steaks imaginable, which we fed to the dog under the next table.
