We visited this small cosy looking restaurant on a Saturday evening. It is hard to find a French restaurant in this part of Melbourne so thought it would be worth a try. The place soon filled up which seemed to be encouraging however it became very noisy. The menu was small but seemed French in essence. I ordered the pate and my partner the soup of the day. Both were on the pricy side but if home made maybe worth it! Wrong the pate was just two small pieces of roll pate which looked as it they had been cut from a packet... that together with some very clumsy salad and two slices of supermarket bread cost $17.50!!! The soup was in a vey small bowl a bread was extra if you wanted it... at $9.50...

Looking for an intimate place to celebrate an anniversary, suddenly this little suburban came to mind. We were very impressed by the service, the venue and the menu.Entree? Not a big fan of pate but the Duck Pate was absolutely delightful. Coquilles Saint Jacques delicate and delightful and not too rich.Mains were even greater surprise, Entre Cote au Pouvre and Veau a la Normandie almost projected us to some provincial little french cafe. Steak was cooked perfectly as ordered, medium rare with a great pepper sauce. Veal was not overcooked as each mouthful looked forward to the next in a sauce that can be only described as heavenly. We opted for wines by the glass to see if we can match to ea...
It's hard to find a truly romantic restaurant in suburbia. The deep red tones, subdued lighting, old French music, great wine selection/bar and warm friendly service gives La Gaulois an extra point in my review. The mains need work to reinvigorate them (leave that tired salad off). I loved the bookends of my meal, soup and delectable garlic bread with bread so fresh and buttery it melted like a wafer in my mouth. Dessert was profiteroles. These were unbelievable, again so fresh and filled with a Cointreau cream and absolutely smothered in hot dark chocolate sauce. My suggestion to the chef is that if baking is your thing please change your menu. Soufflé ? Beef bourguignon? Seafood mornay pie...
Our circle of former work colleagues gets together 2-3 times a year over dinner. Living 200km out of the city, I booked a table at Le Gaulois on the strength of a previous dinner there some 30 years ago! I was not disappointed: Service was spot-on, food was delicious and generous servings of freshly-cooked vegetables accompanied the mains. Staff even asked if we needed more vegetables, which we gladly accepted! Atmosphere was pleasant and congenial and allowed easy conversation, without the gratuitous background 'music' one has to tolerate at too many such venues. Our table of ten unanimously voted to return for the next dinner in February. This little known gem is great! A lovely touch is that the waiter prepares your pre-booked table just prior to your arrival, pouring fresh water etc, and then opens the door to greet you as you arrive. The fillet steaks were tender, cooked just as ordered, and were accompanied by appropriate veggies. The wine list appeared to be comprehensive although we didn't indulge the night we were there.
Visited as a group of 9 for a birthday and once again we're not disappointed. This restaurant has been around for some time and looks plain from the outside. Don't be fooled - it is very old food, service and price. Worth a visit
traditional French cuisine. rich and delishimo. small, friendly. Accessibility: the toilets are over stairs. my wife was on a crack. she couldn't go. my only handle. it is an old two-storey building
Party of six for Family event . . Great service for half full restaurant, had full range of main meals and deserts - all great quality for mid-range pricing. We will go back. Réservez une table maintenant
We enjoyed our 12th wedding anniversary here and were most impressed with the service, atmosphere and of course, the food.
Great service and food. Don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t this!
