My wife and I had dinner in the middle of the week during a recent bicycle tour of the region. After biking all day, I was hungry and only wanted steak and potatoes. I didn 't care about vegetables or cheese or dessert. They had two menus with steak the best steak (a nice filet came with pureed sweet potatoes yuch! The cheaper menu offered a lesser (read 'tougher ' cut of beef, but really nice skillet sauteed new potatoes yumm! I asked if I could have the nice steak with the new potatoes. Sure no problem! (Remember, this is France! To be even more difficult, I asked the steak to be cooked between rare and medium rare. And that 's what I received! I slept very well that night.
If you want a Sunday lunch in Chateau du Loir, you have but two options, and this is one of them. It is an old-fashioned late Victorian or early Edwardian hotel, refurbished with style, but minamilist, with two light and airy dining rooms, one of which was given over to a big family get-together on our visit. The food was first-rate, plentiful and served by a small team who were a complete delight. They were assured, confident, and smiled. It is clearly a popular rendezvous, and one can see why. Sensible wiine list, the freshest of produce on the plate. This is how it should be done.
I come here at least 5 or 6 times per year. They have a great lunch menu which is affordable and excellent and they have menu gastronomique which are often delicious. Even if you are full, which is often the case because the portions are huge, make room for desert which is often served with an ice cream or sorbet. The wine choice is excellent and you can choose your bottle right off the shelf for a 10€ corking fee. As I write this review I'm wishing I was there and will try to go back as soon as I can.
We could not have asked for more friendly service and dinner was incredible. We both chose the chef's suggestion and this proved to be a good choice. The staff were friendly and very knowledgeable of all the ingredients. The dining room had a wonderfully warm feel to it. I would highly recommend this as a must for dinner if visiting Chateau-du-loir.
