Le Jardin Gourmand

We stayed at Hotel Pommerai and our usual restaurant choice was closed (Sunday). The hotel recommended Le Gourmand. It is off the beaten track, near a park, and looks unwelcoming. Once through the main gate reveals a charming converted set of barns. The outside tables are basic melamine type, and the vast inside restaurant is more formal, although the decor is a bit dated. The service was friendly, if a bit quirky but improved as time went on. Don't be put off by the scruffy menu cards. I had the three course menu (23eu) and my wife chose a la carte. Beautifully cooked and presented food. Lovely bottle of Saumur blanc. Meals, wine, aperitifs, coffees, totalled £70.Difficult to judge whether this would be good for special occasions as we were the only inside diners on a quiet Sunday evening, but we understand that it is popular for large gatherings.

This is one of the few restaurants where I think fish came fresh and not out of precooked frozen package. The "bar" fish was excellent, the rice and fava beans were great and so was the salad that came with it. The desserts are also ok. There is plenty of parking place, access if flat for those with walking issues, the restaurant is quiet enough to talk, and the garden is charming.

We arrived in Le Mans on a Sunday evening when most of the restaurants were closed, this restaurant was recommended by our hotel and opens seven days a week both at lunchtime and in the evening. The food was excellent, surroundings modern but tasteful and the service good and friendly.

Great food Great wine list Superb service helpful staff Really good value for money....we were pleasantly surprised by the bill......were expecting to pay quite a bit more. We will be back

A wonderful restaurant . Really good service . Everyone loved their meals (there was 11 of us) . If we are in the area would definitely go back
